from gen 1 service manual (all I've got, but Gen 2 should be similar if not identical) ..."if your readings are "much lower" than 60vAC @ 4000RPM...alternator (stator) is defective"

I'd say approx 50% readings constitute "much lower"

Before condemning...are the output wires crusty hard? Any evidence of excessive heating or burning on the connector or terminals?

You may want to PM member Saabnut...(he'll likely have an affordable spare)
It is conceivable a bad rr took out the stator....I have cool running Mosfet upgrades in stock...I would replace it and not risk another stator failure. PM me on that, if you decide.

(wish I could copy/paste the manual page here, but lack the expertise to do so)

our posts crossed....We must be clear...you unplugged the stator connector from the harness. Inside the plug leading to the stator (3 yellow output wires) are 3 terminals ...you are placing your leads, testing AC volts between all 3 possible combinations 1-2, 2- 3 and 1-3.

What is OL?

I just ordered a new Ricks stator as I've been reading up on stator manufacturers as of last night and Ricks seems to be the best hands down. How much for the R/R?

I did. When I did this I get an OL which means Open Loop. When I place the black to a ground, only then do I get a reading.

please clarify what I asked.

unusual for an OEM to fail...unless cooked via a bad reg. I'd still suggest to try Saabnut for an OEM ..he'll be super economical. The Mosfet will prevent any reoccurence.
