Pogo knows the area very well. Maybe he'll chime in with some tips/advice.

Re: Dragon's Tail

I can't suggest anything for hotels. ninjaturtl was just there so definitely consider his suggestion. Robbinsville is close ride. The hotel at Deal's Gap seems decent enough, it puts you right into the action at the intersection of 129 and 28, where Dragon's Tail starts. However, I do remember them last year having a rash of motorcycle thefts overnight, so making sure you secure your bike is a good idea in the area... unless you're riding the 500, which nobody is gonna steal

Unwritten rules of that road is that you pull over for faster people behind you. There are a LOT of pull-off locations, and most cars will pull over for you.

Make sure you're comfortable with low speed turns. These are very cambered turns that can sort of upset your balance if you're not used to it. Unfortunately the 500R's gearing doesn't do all that well for the 20 mph you'll be doing. 1st gear is too buzzy, 2nd gear lacks some pep, 3rd gear gets a bit bogged.

I don't have much time to ride right now (I was too busy to meet up with ninjaturtl), but post what date you'll be going and maybe I can make it up there at some point.

Re: Dragon's Tail

Thanks for all the tips everyone. And i Think I am planning to make a run down there near labor day(still toying with the idea) I would be taking my 500 down there but the rash of thefts makes it scary...I'd bring my bike in the room with me if i could =) The one hotel that puts me right in the action for less than 50 a night would be a good deal.. How do you mean most of the turns will throw my balance off and must be kept in a real low gear?

Re: Dragon's Tail

I'm not sure I'd be too worried about thefts if you're riding your 500.

Labor Day weekend is, to me, a terrible idea just because of all the tourism that's gonna be going on. But if you like that sort of vibe, and I enjoy it sometimes rarely, then go for it. There will be a lot of riders and comradery at the Deal's Gap store, you'll see a lot of awesome bikes and cars, so it could be a cool event. I just don't like a certain critical mass of motorcycles because that's when it can just get hectic with people pulling over or blowing their limits on the curves, that sorta thing.

I'm going to be out of state that weekend unfortunately.

Re: Dragon's Tail

I feel like reviving this dying thread. I am planning a run down here in May from the 23rd to the 26th and also hope to catch part of the Blue Ridge Parkway after i gear up the bike with some luggage and GPS. Is anyone making the run on their 500 this year that wants to join around that time?
