Killer Joe Rocket US helmet deal

While shopping for a new decently-priced helmet, I was checking out the various HJC lids. I bid on one on eBay, but got sniped. Miffed, I kept looking. I recalled that Joe Rocket has HJC make their helmets for them, so I searched them out. I found that the Blaster R1000X was being absolutely blown out. I snagged a red/orange/yellow for $50 and .04 cents to my door. AYKM? It is no Arai or Shoei, but dang if it's not a nice lid. Removable and washable lining, breath deflector, chin screen, 14 total vents and some true aero shape to it. Some of them come with both smoke and clear ("fog free") shields, running about $67-$70 delivered in the US - still a killer deal. DOT and Snell certified. The good news for me is that the Icon IC-01 shields from my other helmets fit, as do Xpeed XD-1 shields. I'm stoked to ride with it, but am still sick and it has been raining. Anyway, just in case anyone is looking for super-visible graphics as I was, doing a lot of interstate/freeway riding. It also comes in blue.

Thanks for mentioning the helmet! Not crazy about the color options, but also not crazy about dropping $500 on a Shoei. Will you update this thread after you get a chance to use the helmet for a week or two and let us know how you like it? I could use a new helmet and the price is definitely right on these things.

Having $5 in eBay bucks, I also pulled the trigger on a blue one, so $45 to my door. Got red and blue jackets - fashion ya' know. As to riding with it, I'm sick and it's raining. Anyway, I live on acreage, so I've been wearing it around the house. They may run just a tad small, but I bought XXL (my other helmets are XL) so that I could wear a balaclava under it in the winter. It's actually quite comfortable. I often have a pressure point on my forehead, but not so with this helmet. If you have an HJC or Icon helmet, the fit is essentially the same, since they are all made by HJC. These are clearance, so no returns! First dry day I'm gonna give it a go - the only issue will be wind noise, but I suspect it is quieter than either my Icons (not bad) or my HJC AC12 (kinda noisy).

If you need both clear and tinted shields, go with the $65-70 ones on eBay, but make sure they mention the free smoke shield - some sellers have stripped the tinted shields out of the boxes to sell separately. That's OK, since I have tinted Icon shields that fit. I'll admit that the graphics are a bit radical, but I want snoozing interstate/freeway drivers to see me.

Crash Test Dummy

The helmet is great - just a little HJC noisy around the ears, so plugs are a good idea. As an aside, I almost tested the helmet for impact protection. Darkness and eyes blurred by one of the meds I take lead me to not perceive a corner coming up, so I hit the gravel shoulder of a familiar curvy section and bounced down the shoulder/embankment for an "interesting" end of ride. Helmet and jacket had leaves and sapling crud on them, but no real damage. Elbow dented my tank and both right signals absorbed damage. The front is gone somewhere and the rear pointing in an odd direction.

Me? My foot was pinned under the bike while cars drove by. A true good Samaritan stopped and pulled the bike off my foot. Everything below my ribs was good, and the bike was rideable, so I manned-up and rode it home. Saturday and Sunday in the ICU of the trauma unit. Broken shoulder (scapula) and five broken ribs on the right side, two of those with two or more breaks. My buttocks did not hurt, but my wife took care of that!

Thanks! No surgery and no casts, so it's just a matter of time. Daytime riding is easy. Nighttime, not so much. If my brand new helmet was whacked, I'd be p!$$Úd!

Ouch! I'm sorry to hear that. The not so bad part is that you will not need surgeries to recover.

I hope you get well soon.

Thanks to both of you! A lesson learned (late in life) but I survived the learning of it.
