Custom Carb Service '17

A little early, but wanted to kick off my yearly thread and report all well, stocked and ready for the upcoming season.

Currently in the house...a Harley Zenith/Bendix carb from a '72 Thunderhead (1000cc Sportster)
This job will spill into '17....no rush at all as the owner (local fella) is doing other winter projects and service on the bike. Some pics will follow. Beyond a "kit" ...some hard parts are needed, some missing, some broken, some bent spring, some which i believe are incorrect....need to do my homework.

HD is new to me, but, as always, will go above and beyond to do a conscientious job. A good referral may lead to more HD work....note some HD also use Mikuni and Keihin carbs!

Hoping for a great '17...and as always, thank you members for your trust and support.

Good luck on your current HD carb.

And yes, some HDs do have Keihin!
Two years ago I pulled the stock problematic down draft twin Mikunis off of Pop's Yamaha Virago and swapped in a single Keihin CV from a HD Heritage Soft Tail.
Virtually identical to the CVK on the EX (although a slightly larger diameter) with the exception that the HD carb has an accelerator pump and of course has the outline of the HD logo on the body casting.

Most of the carbureted Harleys on the road today have the Keihin CV carb. I rebuilt one myself a while back. As OEM said, just like the CVK, but with accelerator pump AND you can buy a new slide/ diaphragm for under $40.

More work on H-Ds would be a good thing. Those guys don't cheap out on their bikes, and it could lead to another sideline for you, selling motorcycle trailers.

Surveys show that 98% of all Harleys sold are still on the road today...

The other 2% actually made it home. 😆😆😆

Sorry, couldn't resist.

ducatiman, are you still selling the 500 carb rebuild kits? You may notice that my post count is not high enough to send you a PM. I will have to remedy that so that we can complete the transaction. My research says that you have the best carb rebuild kit for our bikes and mine need to be rebuild since they are now leaking after a strong dose of carb cleaner in a tank of fuel.

At long last I'm here. Since I got me carb back, weeks ago, it's been non-stop raining and non-stop working for me. Finally got it installed yesterday and it worked perfectly! My bike runs smoother than ever and the carb had never looked so good. The carb came back as beautiful as ever and Ducatiman packaged them very professionally. Very happy with working through him, when it needs another refurbishing I know who I'm going to call.

not sure when the switch was made but mine runs on the keihin butterfly, just doesn't like zenith or even the cv gave dad a shock when i pulled the carbs off the ex and told him they are keihin without the accelerator pump, he looked at his softtail and started laughing. i believe some hds also came stock with tilston, not many actually ran with them though.

hoping to try the mikuni 38 on the 72 some time in the future, supposedly easier to start, if you don't mind me asking why did you replace them?

Hopefully ducatiman won't mind me stepping in here. Thunderheads are rare after market aluminum heads for iron head Sportys. Back in the '80s there was a dealership in Florida that was involved with the development of the famous Lucifer's Hammer, a succession of bikes that successfully competed in the Battle of the Twins series. I believe the development of Thunderheads was an offshoot of this project.

And, even if they weren't, I still can't resist posting this video once again. My apologies if I'm overstepping here, ducatiman.

Not at all K-wop, a great old vid. Those were Daytona glory days...

Some notes:

#266 Malcolme Tunstall ...did business with both him and his dad (Syd of Syds Cycles, an old Duc and Euro dealer out of St Pete, Fla) when I worked at a distributor, importer and wholesaler many years ago, member of the Motorcycle Industry Council.

My lord the old track...notice the haybales.

At 2:12 did you notice the comparatively full stands? Dwarfs todays sparse crowd for the 200. And BoTT was always a crowd favorite

Of course the commentators were a young Dave Despain and Dale Singleton (200 winner)

If you ever saw and heard Lucifers Hammer....impressive...deep, mechanical sounding and loud. Saw Church on that thing a few times back then....and it very well may have been the inspiration for Eric Buell's idea to develop his early HD engined sporties.

Luchinelli's Cagiva-Ducati was tuned by Reno Leoni (from NJ). Jimmy Adamo ran Leoni tuned bikes (Ducatis and Guzzi's)_at Daytona and Bridgehampton ....right in my backyard.

Just some thoughts and great old memories. Sorry for the run-on.

Actually, I'm pretty sure Erik Buell had a hand in the development of the next bike of the campaign.

I ended up on a infield Daytona concession stand lunch line with Dick O'Brien (HD race director). An AMA luminary...I recognized him instantly, greeted and briefly introduced myself. Very polite, friendly and respectful gentleman (we made small talk) and member of AMA hall of fame.

For a number of years Eric Buell actually rode in the 200. At an AMA sponsored "Breakfast at Daytona" event years ago, he was featured speaker, introducing his last production version at the time, was it 1125?

Back to topic Custom Carb Services...refurbed carbset #51 will be up on the open market in a few days.
Another from '06... I believe its going to be another pristine example.
