I just got back from the LTA event in Loring, Maine where I ran my '09 Ninja this past weekend.  This was a 1.5 paved runway with a mile shutdown.  Smooth as silk.  A tailwing=d didn't hurt either.   I ran 131.9 mph with the tach showing about 11,300 rpm though it is reading 500 rpm high per dyno tests. This was with stock gearing and the following mods, some of which aren't popular/recommended for this bike but keep in mind, land speed racing is all about wide open throttle.

Gutted stock exhaust cans, Dynojet Stage 1 Jet, K&N, FOG Airbox Mod
Fuel was a 50/50 mix of 100 and 89 octane as I did not want to transport fuel containers.  That decision also led to my running Modified Partial Streamlined class versus Production though I ran the same configuration I do in Production class at Maxton.

Assume the rev limiter would have kicked in around 11,500 rpm on my tach which may have been worth a few more mph but I was happy with my results and packed up for the 900 mile ride home.  In the jeep not on the bike!   Cheesy

You're running the EX?  The rev limiter on this bike is engine failure, spun bearings I believe.   Tongue  Not a bad top speed though!

what's with the fuel mix? are you running a higher compression motor? i mean, you didn't list it as a mod, but what other reason could there be? if not, you probably could have gone faster on 85-87

Hope I don't find out on that rev limiter possibility.  The fuel mix was a result of left over 100 from the previous event and not having my syphon and jugs with me on the road.   Undecided

any particular reason you run high octane fuel?

Buddy of mine took his 83 Magna to a dyno days event here in town and used high octane fuel. brought back lower than expected numbers. after i told him he was a fool for not using 87, the next event held brought him back to the top. fuel matters, and it doesn't matter how fast the engine spins or for how long. if it calls for 87, use 87.

If winning means money, you may want to look into race fuels... $75 for 5 gal. of U4.2 ain't bad, and you only need a splash...

In Production or Gas classes we have to run track provided 100 octane.  Fuel classes are wide open.  BTW, the speedo is off, as most are, by 10 mph at top end so it looked like a 142 mph but I knew better!   Cheesy

Regular (87) gas is fine. Increase octane does not help.

No rev limiter. Bike make no more power above 9500. All downhill.

I don't agree with no more power over 9500, @ 10,000 my bike gets angry and pushes harder..LOL!

Agreed.  Problem is, it gets angry and tries to push the rods through the bearings Tongue

tj - hit the "valve float" rev limiter coming up an acceleration ramp in 1st at about 11+ and it was not fun; didn't really take time to look at the tach as I was busy merging and shifting

Speed and timing would be great here. Too bad we can't close down Salina Municipal. Anybody who has flow a small plane over Kansas will know this facility. Let's just say it is a designated Shuttle emergency alternate.

Im  curious...  you have run at Maxton? What did  you run there?  What mods did you make to run on a sliptream class? Do you have an added fairing/slipstreamer?  Did this on stock gearing?  Ever ran on one or two teeth smaller in the back sprocket? After watching "The Worlds Fastest Indian" I am  curious about  running at Maxton and  daring the gods of speed...

Will you be at Speed Week this year in Utah?  If so, we'll have to get together......

I have only run around 120 at Maxton which is 1.5 mph off the record; however, I have an engine build underway that should take care of that.    Grin   I have been running production class only at this point but plan to move into modified partial streamlined once the production record is bumped up a little.  A friend of mine is prepping a ex500 for modified naked class,  At this point I am not planning on speedweek this year but may attend BUB.  Not sure I will drag the bike out there unless it is running real strong at Maxton and Loring.

Understanding that higher octane is to prevent high compression engines suffering from precombustion, would 89 or 91 help with millage?  Curious as when I have put higher octane in the tank I have gotten a little better millage than with 87.

That's an anomaly. Run 87.

"In Production or Gas classes we have to run track provided 100 octane." Sounds like he has to run the track-spec 100 octane.

Could be a gas mix thing. More ethanol means less MPG. They frack around with the mix enough that you may not realize what your running.

That's a good point. Running 20% ethanol as opposed to the 10% you commonly find now will have a noticeable effect on mileage.

Thats why I am only filling at one station in town.  I am trying to keep things as consistent as possible other than the octane.  I may switch to Shell to try it for a few weeks, but their pumps suck (figuratively) and they are another .15 per gallon.  Or chevron.  Either way they are out of the way but it may be worth it for another 2-5 mpg.  Any suggestions on a good brand?

I have always noticed that my vehicles run better on Chevron. Our shell stations used to suck very bad, but now they must have updated their mixtures because shell gas always feels good and doesn't make the exhaust smell like a$$.

Chevron ftw.  We have "Maverick" out here in UT, which is just shitty, bottom-tier gas.  When I had my Accord a couple winters ago I thought I was saving money filling up there (with an extra 3c/gal off with the 'club card') but things started feeling shitty after a couple months and mileage went waaaaaaay down (like 15/16, freeway, in an Accord.  wtf?)  So I start filling at Chevron and it goes right back to 23/24.  Cheap gas is false economy.

Well, next fill up I'll bite the bullet and see what Chevron does.  If I can get above 47 mpg it may be worth the money.  Give me 2 weeks to empty the tank, refuel, and re-empty Wink
