why NOT not use it? It's a perfectly suitable oil...

When they say Max-Cycle they mean Royal Purple, which is held to be the best oil by many racers i've know in 6 years of racing but it ain't cheap...
here's their link with some testing:
many bike shops carry it, if not your local speed shop ought to have it..

Long post, didn't read it all, but I saw someone mention Rotella T. I also am currently running Rotella T, diesel engine oil. I think it's something like a 5W won't have anti friction aditives in it. As far as I can tell I've had no problems runnint the Rotella.

Ok so... I think i get the idea. Synthetic > Regular.... What is the diff between 10w40 and 10w50? Is a 50 weight oil too thick?

the difference is the 50 weight will be 'thicker' at operating temperature than the 40 weight will be. it is harder for the oil pump to pump a 50 weight than a 40 weight.

I use the cheapest sludge oil that Castrol makes. Its like 3 bucks a litre. It's gotten my bike over the 42,000 km mark and I've had zero issues to date (minus my signal light gremlin.)
Frankly I think you could run a crankcase of WD-40 if you changed it often enough.
You guys are putting too much thought into oil.

lol, I know it won't work, but I'm just trying to make a point that I think people worry a bit TOO much. It's good to think about what you're doing to your bike, but honestly, for the average commuter/weekend rider that frequents this bike, any oil will do the job. Maybe a track rider will see a difference, but I rock my EX at high RPM's all the time during my rides and it runs as fine as the day I got it, no signs of mechanical issue!

Well i'd disagree with you on just this point. basically all i do 90% of the time is commute or weekend ride, and it's not even that hard core. That Honda GN4 oil honda wanted in for 8000 miles. 8000 MILES!!! The oil is generally FINISHED at 2000! leaving it in for 8000 miles is SURE to cause massive damage. I think it's important to know what you're doing to the motor by putting in any ol' oil...

Changed at the proper intervals... I think Royson's probably right...

Tucked in one of the isles of your local Advance Auto parts you will find a small section of motorcycle products. They have motorcycle specific valvoline and even a fram filter for the ex. Less expensive than the local bike dealer.

[/quote]
Nah. FRAM is just fine. I hate the fact that stupid rumors like this get spread around but I guess that's what the internet is for...
Have used many a FRAM oil filter in cars, trucks, cycles, etc... for many, many years (say 25+ years). NO PROBLEMS EVER.
I'd like to see actual proof that these filters caused problems/failures. Not just some guy cutting these apart and giving his OPINION.
Think about it, if FRAM filters cause so many problems, would they still be in business? I think not.
Or, if the filters were sooo bad, you'd think they would get tired of all the lawsuits and change their product.

I should ad to my point above, is that any oil is fine WITH FREQUENT CHANGES!
I change mine every 3,000 to 4,000 kms. That's what, 2,500 miles? But yeah, I change the oil way more often than I need, and do the same in my car. I'd rather keep cheap but clean oil than expensive oil I can't affford to change often.

What kind of proof do you need? Signed and notarized from a Fram executive and/or their R&D division to confirm? obviously consumer reports isn't good enough... You know how difficult that would be to retain that accurate of results? f that, i don't care enough to prove or disprove it, i just wont use their products.
