Newb!

Hey all! My name is Janine and I have just recently purchased a 1991 EX500... I also have an 85 Ninja 600 (traded electronic drum set and $100 for it) and I spent $900 for this EX from a guy in town. I figured it was a good idea since it has more power than a 250 and I can fit on it at a whoping 5 ft 0 in tall lol
So far it needs a new battery and to have the carbs cleaned. It has 4122 miles on it and has sat in a garage since probably about 1995 but it still starts and ~sort of~ idles. I have a lower cowl for it that I will be putting on after she's running also. The paint is mint!

Congrats on your purchase of an EX; I know you will enjoy it! I have only had mine briefly, but I really like it.
If you search on this site, like in the FAQ section, will find tips on what to do when you buy a used bike. One that has set around will have to have the carbs cleaned, and you will want to get a fuel filter. There are some other tips you can pick up on, as well.
Cool that you have Hers and His Ninjas
Sounds like mopar fans, too.....

Yeah, we have his and hers DSMs too lol. Definitely Mopar fans though. We were joking about if Chrysler made motorcycles they'd try to get a hemi in them lol.
I've done a little bit of scanning so far, definitely some good reads! I'm probably going to take the bike to a shop nearby and have them look it over.
I forgot how awkward it was to learn about something new like this, like when I was first getting into cars I would have no idea what I was looking at. Now I am very comfortable working on cars and knowing what to look for. I just hope I can get even half as comfortable with bikes! lol

It's great you work on cars, too! I have always tried to do what I could myself, or bribe friends to help or traded labor on somebody's project, but I am still just an amateur bike mechanic. (As I get older, I find it is more fun, since I am much less impatient than I was when I first tried to work on my bikes).
I have been lazy, too, and paid for stuff, just to get it done faster, since I also use bikes for work transportation. Fortunately, over the years, I have found forums like this one that have lots of good advise, especially for those who want to do some wrenching themselves.

One of my good friends had an EX500 before he got his current, so I'm hoping that with a little begging and offering of free food he may come over and give me a hand with fixing and teaching me about my bike. I found that the mix of forum research, questioning, and having someone there to help you hands on is the way for me to go

Thanks! I'm looking forward to getting it out on the road, makes focusing on being stuck inside at work pretty tough lol

Dredging this up since I was gone for a long time. Bought a house, sold the bike, keeping an eye out for a new one, so I thought I'd drop by again.
It's getting warmer (and wetter at the moment) here in New England, so the riding bug has bitten again!

I'm in New England too, SE MA. This time of year is a lot of 40 degree rainy days on the coast. Good luck on your bike search. I just found a Ninja 500 a few weeks ago... in CT.
