Oil leak or burning oil?

I have a '98 ex500 with 33,000 miles on it. It leaks oil slowly, and today i had to top it off with more oil for the second time in about 3 weeks. It seems to be losing oil faster than just the leak but i'm not sure if there's an easy way to tell if it's burning oil or not. I've never seen the bike smoke, doesn't smoke on start up. Thanks in advance for any help.

Get a friend to follow you to look for blue smoke. Oil burners will typically emit a belch of blue when you accelerate after sitting idling for a couple of minutes (like at a light). Also after a period of deceleration (like down a hill) they'll emit a puff of blue when you get back on the throttle. If it is still functional, the EX's PAIR system will tend to minimize smoking but there is a limit to how much the system can digest.

Alternatively, fix the leak (which isn't a bad idea, anyway). If it still uses oil then it has to be going out the exhaust. At 30,000 miles, some minor oil consumption is normal. It all depends on how many miles, how hard you ride, and how much you need to add.

Garage
Although not extremely likely, it could be the intake valve seals gone south. Although anything is possible, if it has good compression, it probably also has good oil rings. But fix that leak first. With a slightly pressurized crankcase when running, it may leak more than you know.

I finally figured out why I like Ducatis: With their exhaust note and dry clutch, they sound almost like a Guzzi!
