My first though was maybe it was a cam chain tension issue or a valve slap but you say it doesn't change with RPM?
Could be as simple as the exhaust manifold not being tightened to spec or something rattling on the exhaust somewhere. Air leakage sometimes sounds like ticking, although i would expect that to also change with rpm. Let the engine cool and check the tightness on the nuts for the exhaust and see if there is any difference.
