snapped front sprocket bolt

Very frustrated here. Clymer said to tighten these little bolts to eighty something. I thought that sounded a bit tight, but I never got close to that before the head snapped off one. (I've searched here and seen this must be a misprint in the manual). Anyway, I now have one bolt in the front sprocket. The other bolt is broken. I have read in previous post that these little bolts do very little and the sprocket should stay on, but I'm nervous. Advice?
Thank you.

That's not an error in The Clymer manual. It says 87 inch pounds. Divide that by 12 for foot pounds. It's a little over 7 foot pounds, or basically, lightly snug. You're instincts were right. Those tiny bolts can't take anywhere near 87 foot pounds.

Consider this part of your mechanic's education. Mechanical work has more pitfalls than people think. I believe we've all had our share of broken bolts, damaged components and banged up fingers along the way.

Thanks so much for the information and the encouragement. I will look at the bright side: I will never forget what an inch-pound is.

Thanks, FOG, for telling me how to deal with the problem. I'll order a new sprocket and try to drill the bolt out of this one when I have a chance, use it next time.
