Gorge?

live in Lewiston, and i was wanting to take a ride to the coast and visit my grandparents in the hillsborro area of OR. Lots of the people i ride with said that the gorge is the worst place to ride. it gets pretty nasty some days i know but on normal day how does it far. anythoughts?

Re: Gorge?

The Gorge is a great place to ride. Sometimes windy and rainy but there is no prettier scenery. Lots of side trips and lots of riders. If you stay on the WA side of the Columbia, it's a two laner with little traffic.

Re: Gorge?

The gorge is definitely nice, the worst part is probably all of the traffic. A couple of good non-gorge rides in the area:

- WA SR503 to N.F. 90

One of my favorites, great roads, great scenery, and relatively light traffic. Was up there a couple of weeks ago, some interesting riding. Snowbanks must've been 13+ feet high in areas, nobody around.

- 224 / Clackamas River Road

Beautiful scenery, light traffic, and there are a lot of forest roads you can continue on from the end of it. A little too forest-ish for me with animals and all, though.

Many more, too. Drop me a pm if you want some pointers.

Re: Gorge?

rattlesnake grade? what are you talking about. if you talking about the Lew. grade it to rough for sport bikers right now last winter did a number on it. their are 4 to 5 inch pot wholes. so if we wanna go that way we have to take the old spiral high way.

Re: Gorge?

Late in on this one, but the Gorge is some of the best riding anywhere....Sport bikes come from all around to strafe all the side canyons. Yes, right in the bottom of the main part of the Gorge, it is windy and busy with traffic, since it is a flat way through the Cascade range....but every few miles there is a side canyon with twisty roads and little traffic.
East side of the range is dry and hot..west side is wet and cooler with shorter sight-lines.
