Another New Guy
Great site!! I haven't ridden for 20 years, and decided it was time to get back in the saddle. I did alot of research to find a good bike that that would do everything I wanted it to. I ended up buying a 04 EX500. It needed some work, so I started looking around for information on getting the bike fixed up and on the road. Whenever I typed in a question it usually took me to this site, so I joined. I read through alot of information on the forms and figured out exactly what I wanted to do. I now have a whopping 30 miles on the bike, and will get plates for it tomorrow, finally.
My bike has just under 12k on it and is in nice shape, not perfect condition, but good enough for me. When I picked it up the tires were almost flat, it was hard to shift, and I could smell the old gas it was burning. It did run and everything worked.
After reading lots of posts this is what I did to get it on the road. Haynes Manual. Oil/filter change Rotella T4 15w-40(it now shifts much better, last guy probably had car oil in it). New plugs. I cut 3" off the fork springs when I replaces the leaking fork seals. replaced the rear spring with one from a 95 ex-250. New break pads. New mirrors (Emgo 20-43031 OEM Style Mirror), I can see! Checked and adjusted the valve clearance. Drilled 1" hole in the airbox. Rebuilt the carbs(parts from Ducatiman, Thanks!). Fogbones(Thanks Fog)!! And finally michelin pilot street tires stock size. I think that's all.
I can't compare before and after, but I definitely like the after. Future upgrades are Fog's rearsets and some riser blocks. Right now I just want to get on the road. Thanks for all the great info!
