Castrol GTX 10-40w. Changed every 3000 miles with filter.

Re: What Type of Oil Do You Use?

I've been using automotive full synthetic oil in my motorcycles since it was invented. I've never noticed any clutch problems, even in my 145 hp VMax with 38,000 miles on it's clutch. I use synthetic instead of dyno oil because it smells better and can handle high heat better. I live in Las Vegas and it gets HOT out here. Sometimes, very rarely, I'll use full synthetic motorcycle oil but it costs 3 times as much and doesn't do anything any better than any other oil that I've used.

I use 40 weight oil. I don't care about the 5W, 10W or 20W part of the oils viscosity because that's the oil's weight at 32F (the freezing point of water) which we don't see here in Vegas very often. My car has an oil temperature gauge and at startup in the garage it's oil temperature is between 45F in the winter and 98F in the summer.

I never ride my bike until it's warmed up at least 2 minutes, even in the summer time, more in the winter. I never run it to high rpms untill at least 5 miles are on it. So the oil is never cold when I rev the engine. In my car I wait till the oil temperature is 175 or higher before I rev the engine but my current motorcycle (Ninja 500R) doesn't have an oil temperature gauge so I don't know what it's oil temperature is. I have had oil temperature gauges on other bikes and it takes 10 miles for the oil to reach maximum temperature (I don't remember what that temperature was but in my car it's 214F).

Re: What Type of Oil Do You Use?

I know all about this debate but honestly, motor oil is motor oil as long as you change it every 2-3k, you cant go wrong.

you're right. oil is oil as long as it's changed.

unless you don't need to change it, at which point you'd be tossing money down the drain... anyone interested in doing some OIl studies? I've got my Amsoil kit on the way!

Re: What Type of Oil Do You Use?

i've been using amsoil for years and really believe in the stuff. i hardcore dragraced for 5 years and amsoil made the difference. i'm using it in the ex now just changed to it. read this comparsion to help you make a choice. it all comes down to the ballbearing test and amsoil usually wins.

ps i'm not an amsoil dealer either, i just like the products!!!

I use the Shell Rotella-T as well. Not sure what that qualifies as in the poll - I guess automotive full syn right?

I used kawi-chem from the dealer. Before that I think it was casteroil on the old bike.

Re: What Type of Oil Do You Use?

I rock the R4 fully synthetic in my bike. With 40k miles it has really smoothed out the shifting and makes it run a little better/smoother.

Re: What Type of Oil Do You Use?

Just changed oil and filter last weekend. Stopped by Wally-World and picked up what they had. Mobile 1 Full Synthetic and a Fram Oil filter.

We'll see how it works out once I get it back from the shop
