Track Bike Build

Hi everyone,

I have finally bitten the bullet a decided to build myself a track bike out my '96 EX500S. I have read a few things but can't quite find exactly what i am looking for.

I am just looking for some information in terms of what i should be working on first. I am by no means an experienced track rider - 1 tack day on my cbr600rr - but i caught the bug and need to feed my growing addiction to the idea of belting round a track. I know i will get responses saying that i should improve my riding before anything else, and i will absolutely be doing this, and am fully aware of this requirement.

What i would like from anyone who is willing to offer the advice are some simple mods/upgrades for the bike that will make it better suited to track use. I have a set of BT045's to put on, but I was hoping there would be a couple more things i could do to improve handling.

Thanks in advance for any ideas given.

@fog is the track guru for this bike, but likely you will need to upgrade the fork springs, the rear shock and change the dog bones for "fog bones". This for handling.

In regards to power, do the "fog mod" to the air box / filter.

You can search the information in the forum, or wait for someone more experienced to guide you on the right path. I do not offer to guide you myself, because I have no expertise in these modifications.

On that note, considering my inexperience on track, is it actually worth while me doing any modifications to the performance before i gain the experience, or is it better that i spend my time improving my riding and finding the limits before making changes?

well for shear rock bottom go racing mods. do only what your org requires for stay etc.
You will quickly learn what needs to be done. then do them as you budget allows.
As you make changes to your bike you will need to adjust your riding to suit.

If you get serious you will need to do a lot, but start with the simple (cheap ) stuff.

Many thanks for this. I will get the bike to a state that is safe, do a couple more track days and report back here as you say.

Thanks for the quick responses.
