Yeah, congrats Kris! Loved reading the story unfold on your blog.

As per his blog, he has a CBR front end and rear wheel, ZX swingarm, Fox shock, D&D exhaust, and running slicks.

His jetting wouldn't be applicable to our carbs as he's running Keihin CRs.

I recommend you read it all if you haven't already. Lots of wisdom in there!

Thanks for that. Both bikes in the picture above are nearly identical in set-up, aside from bodywork. Complete CBR F3 front end and rear wheel, ZX swingarm, Fox shock, Keihin CRs, I run a D&D exhaust and Joe runs a Kerker I think. Makes for some very close racing.

So the only thing on the bike from an EX is the decal on the tank. Not to belittle the accomplishment. just comparing my experience racing a completely box stock EX and dealing with all the weaknesses.

Unfortunately those weaknesses would render the EX completely uncompetitive in V5 which is a full-blown superbike class, running against bikes with 70 HP or more. Ask me how I know, having run a stock bike in this class previously. Seeing as my EX only makes about 59, you still have to ride the shit out of the thing.

I thought you might have a better take on my championship considering you did the valve work and cylinder lapping for me last year, so for all intents and purposes that's a FOG motor winning out there. Does this mean you don't want me to send you my stuff for refreshing? I was getting ready to ship it all out to you.

Not at all Kris,
Sorry to seem critical, just making a comparison. Certainly Congratulations on you wins. Ido know how hard you have to ride a EX to win.

No problem. I'd love to get a bunch of stock EXs together and race, dragging hard parts all over the place! That would be a blast. Unfortunately nobody wants to race a stock EX anymore. It's too bad really, because we could have all the fun and competition without having to spend all the money on upgrades for a 30 year old bike with 75 year old technology!

Re: EX500 Wins WERA National V5 Championship!

Yes Way back in 2000 Our race (Production twins) was the best racing of the weekend and drew them all to the fences, we had 4 guys in contention and often raced handle bar to handle bar.
Cheap too I could get 2 race weekends out of a set of tires.

Re: EX500 Wins WERA National V5 Championship!

Thats because you weren't going fast enough.
When I was running Mid pack I was using my son's take offs .After he retired I started using the best stuff and went faster. When I got my Penske and the best dunlop race tire I was winning and found I could tell the difference in my tires after a few heat cycles regardless of tread depth. So if I really wanted to win I got new tires .

Re: EX500 Wins WERA National V5 Championship!

Yup. I go about two weekends (4 races) now on a set of slicks. I used to push it to 4 weekends, but you can feel the difference and the lap times reflect it. At least Bridgestone is offering some contingency money to help offset the $400 a set cost, that has allowed me to stay in fresh(er) tires for the 2015 season.

Re: EX500 Wins WERA National V5 Championship!

My home track was Loudon NH A nascar oval with a few wiggly bits added to call it a road course. Now one race weekend they were re surfacing the infield bit that was turns 1,2,3 and re directed us to use the nascar oval turns 1,2 Now on the EX you hit this thing at 100 mph and set the lean in the first few feet, then had to hold that angle for a week until you got round this thing.
It was boring at first, but then I started to experiment with throttle and steering inputs. I learned how to control front and rear sliding ,how to back it in and even to push the front at will.
In normal road corners you are only at full lean for a few seconds. the rest is turning in to powering out. so you don't get much practice at full lean.
This new found skill improved my lap times considerably due to my corner entry speeds being much higher because I was able to control front push out to the apex.

Scary but fast.

Re: EX500 Wins WERA National V5 Championship!

Nice job Kris.......I never knew your bike was an ex besides the tank :P So now that WERA is biting the dust for us,are you coming to CCS? All the FZR guys got ex250's for next year for the ultralight thunderbike and 500 supersport classes.......besides me.I had to be the stubborn one and started rebuilding my fzr400 engine for next year

Yeah, I am quite pissed about WERA killing Summit, and no vintage at VIR, so the Mid-Atlantic blows. I am sick of driving 8 hours everywhere to run the SE region. I am thinking about selling the FZR hybrid and only running the EX instead. Got to do some thinking over the winter....

Re: EX500 Wins WERA National V5 Championship!

The Atlantic/Mid-Atlantic schedule is pretty condensed without all the hauls that WERA requires. I can do a full season(6 rounds)besides the CMP round all within 2-2.5 hours from home, granted you are a little ways off from a quick commute to NJ,but still far closer than Alabama. Whats in your Hybrid FZR? If you go with the EX as your only runner, its gotta be mostly stock as opposed to how yours is now :P I had alot of fun on my stock EX this year, and each weekend had it handling a little better each time.Lotsa giggling going on under my helmet on that bike.BUUUUT im too commited to FZR400's and I miraculously ended up with 2 pristine crankshafts in the past 2 weeks, soooooo im rebuilding 2 400 engines and yankin out my 600 engine.Either way, hope to see you out there with us

What mods would I be allowed with the FZR?

Re: EX500 Wins WERA National V5 Championship!

Dude! RTFBR! Just kidding. No engine work besides up to 1mm over pistons. No frame mods, besides the subframe since its a seperate piece. 17" rims but stock width......throws a monkey wrench into everyones plans with the f2 rims, but the class isnt packed so they are letting us slide. The age of the FZR's allow airbox removal, but the stockish engines run like ass without them. I can help you with some parts if you need to do some backtracking.I know yours was fairly well built beyond the rules in question.

Yeah, I'm beyond the point of no return with that thing. I am actually thinking about selling it.

[/quote Ive got too many already Just think......you could do Summit 3 times and VIR twice I think,if you do CCS. Not bad concidering what it takes to do a season at WERA Personally Id stick with the FZR,but im sure you knew that :P
