1/4 mile times?

I understand most of racing the 500 is devoted to the twisties, I am wondering if any of you ever go to the local 1/4 mile tracks? What are your times? And at what tracks?

Loudon is only 45 minutes from my house, I could not imagine if AMA superbike came back, I would attend every race! Anyone have any further literature other than what is on the "soup" website?

Re: 1/4 mile times?

there are a few people who have gotten their EX down the drag strip. Most passes are in the mid 13 second range. breaking into the 12s would be pretty impressive on a stock bike.

But if you start taking weight off (and get some consistent practice), I would believe you if you said low 12s.

Re: 1/4 mile times?

13.2 @ 100 with -2 front sprocket, muzzy exhaust, k and n filter and a loose as fark chain. This was with basically no launch, 60 ft was 1.9x - 2.0 on all runs. Im gonna go back with stock exhaust once I fix my jets / pilots

Hey Bran, I run the same exhaust and filter setup as you. What kind of jetting do you have? What difference in the power curve have you noted with this setup vs. stock? I've never run a stock EX, so I'm wondering if maybe I should try stock jets/exhaust/air filter..

Re: 1/4 mile times?

I actually bought it modded... it has dynojet stage 3 jets in now iirc. I put the stock exhaust back on and now I have no power under 6k, probably cause of the jets though... up toip it feels the same as the Muzzy exhaust.

Re: 1/4 mile times?

the kid I sold that Muzzy pipe to (can't remember his sn...) ran low 13s with no mods (this was before the pipe went on).

he was pretty small though. probably only 150 lbs.

someone build a 10 second EX-500. I want video of that.

Re: 1/4 mile times?

psst working on that one for you; we'll see summer 09; NO really i'm not tellling what i've done to it though; or if it survives LMAO. I used to run 11.80's in texas with my prior setup. No kidding! I used to race a guy with a 78 camaro with a 383 ci aluminum heads; aluminum intake with 150 hp shot of nitrous DEAD EVEN amd he told me he ran 11:80 consistently! Even ran a newbie with a GSXR-750 dead even; but he'd only had it for 6 months;aka sucker ! We'll see, if it can be done I WILL DEFINITELY POST IT; but even I doubt it

...... and now i get called a retard by FOG! :P

Re: 1/4 mile times?

nah, I think FOG will stay silent on this one. You're acknowledging it's not a stable modification or something that will last.

as much as I think it's silly to mod a bike beyond its capabilities, i would totally take a $600 EX and sink a few hundred into it trying to make the cheapest 10-second vehicle possible - especially if it's an EX w/o a title.

I imagine on an EX, 90% of the modifications could be achieved by chopping stuff off, and going -2/+3 with sprockets. useless on top-end, but still good for quarter mile runs.

stickier rear tire, chopped exhaust (who cares if it makes power below 7k? you're drag racing...) and maybe a small shot of nitrous if you're feeling adventurous.

now THAT would be fun.

You might want to consider a belly pan. That oil goes right in front of the rear tire.

Re: 1/4 mile times?

You need to be doing about 130mph at the end of a run to get into the 10's. The EX500's stock gearing will probably do that speed, but not within a quarter mile. Gearing it down -2/+3 will make it impossible.

Stock gearing and double the power ought to get you there. Good luck with that.

Re: 1/4 mile times?

that and ALOT OF ENGINE WORK; and $$$$

falicon crank, engine dynamics 600cc kit, a great launch; aka no wheelies to the moon, right gearing might make it possible??! but probably not?! Don't know anyone running a 600 cc kit though, does anyone else??

owe and a 45 mph tailwind might help!

Re: 1/4 mile times?

You can make all the Modifacations you want. you will not exceed 12-12.5 seconds with only 50 -60 HP to do sub 11 seconds you will need about 80-85 hp.. Ain't gonna happen.

Re: 1/4 mile times?

Hey FOG, bet I can beat 12.5 with this! or at least come close

https://www.ex-500.com/index.php?acti...a=view;id=1084

I just bought it! 2001 w/ 44k, k&n intake/filter, bassani exhaust for $15,800 w/ 5 yr& 60k warranty for $17K total! Now if only the ice storms here east of K.C. would QUIT so I can pick it up from the dealership!

Sheesh this things gonna slow down the other winter project at least a month or two.... OWELL!

Re: 1/4 mile times?

^ well there it is - a way to make an 11 second EX500. Just put it in the bed of a Ford Lightning :P

(i know the lightning will struggle to get down to 11 - especially with an extra 420 lbs in the bed, but with the right tires and enough NOS, i think it'd happen)

Re: 1/4 mile times?

Teh Ex is a mid 12 bike at best. Cant see one getting into the 11's unless you weight 50 pounds and are a pro rider. I just dont bite on the 11.80 posted ,Would need time slips for that. I ran my last one twice, Best I got was 12.87, but I think you could inprove on that a tad.

Re: 1/4 mile times?

Wolf66 had time slips for his bike, but it was very UN-stock. built engine, bored to 650cc's, ZX6 swingarm(?), and a TON of weight taken off. At one point I don't think he even had a charging system.

even then, I think it was like 12.3

Re: 1/4 mile times?

My best time (not at a strip, im headed there sometime this summer) but we used a yard-wheel, an air-horn and a stopwatch, and i was landing 12.55-58 through 8 runs. I have gone one up in the rear, and cobra F1 exhaust, no fairing. Power shifting all the way through, and a 6.5k launch. a little bit of bog, not much.

sorry guys, i forgot K&n Filter, and my best time. 12.51. i checked the speedo and it was all like right at or just above 100. the 12.5's-6's were consistent

No, I never ran the Superbike motor at a drag strip, that 12.9 was last summer with a bone stock motor with a Yoshi 2/1...my bike is a little lighter though, 395ish wet (1/2tk)..I would guess the SB motor @ 79-81hp in race trim with shorter track gearing was in the 11.s somehere.
I out dragged built 750 Ducati's and 650 Hawks and bored 400 FZR's so it had to be pretty zippy and in the Utube link @ Daytona where I beat all 80 bikes to the turn is with Daytona high banks 17/39 gearing. *admittedly turn 1 is not that far.. This was before we re-enforced the frame and lost the tail subsection.
