On the ride home last night...

...we had parent/teacher conferences last night. Normally, because very few parents take the time to show up, I get out of these things at 7pm. Last night had a decent turn-out and didn't get finished until 7:45. So it was dusk and I have a 30 mile trip home.

The things one see's!!!

Wish I had a camera but a few miles from the school in a residential area I notice a guy on a bicycle pulling one of those baby trailers. As I passed him I see his wife/girlfriend in the back of this thing smoking a heater!!! (Only in Florida!)

Then, I get on the 301 which passes through a wooded, nature preserve area. About a mile in off the side was a big-ass wild pig...I mean he was huge!!! These things ran in front of me one night and I barely saw them coming out of the woods. Thank goodness this guy was off to he side munching away.

A few more miles down the read was a dead bird, one of those anhinga's.

And then a few miles more and, FWAP!!! A small bat...YES, A BAT!!!...hit me just above the visor/on the forehead area of my helmet!!!
There was only one time I've encountered bats on a motorcycle, a few years ago coming home from Leesburg through the Green Swamp preserve area. They were flying all over and I was, literally, ducking my head behind the windscreen.

Made it home after that but...it's getting to be that time of year when the critters come out. I don't normally ride in the dark but when I do I'm ALWAYS scanning!

One time at night an opossum ran right between my wheels. I was on my XT, don't think there would have been enough clearance for him to go under the EX. I think I even felt running over his tail.

2006 Ninja500R Purchased new July 2006; 0 miles. Miles as of January 2019; 102,137. It's a GO bike, not a SHOW bike.

It's been quite warm for the last week. Finally starting to drop down to normal temps for this time of year. We hit 93 on Tuesday.

As it is warming up sufficiently, all manner of critters are coming out. Snakes are warming themselves on the asphalt when the sun goes down now. Dead ones all over the place on the back roads. 'Possum and racoon are out and about now too. Stealing the fruit off the trees all over my neighborhood.

Then there's the turkeys and pea fowl. We have both wild turkey and wild peacock and pea hen here. The legacy of the settlement of this part of the country. Both were kept as pets by farmers way back when because they scared off the rattle snakes. Now there are wild flocks of them all over the place. Some, within the city limits here.

Nothing like railing into a tight, decreasing radius corner on a mid summer morning only to find the exit blocked by a flock of big a$$ birds.

As for riding at night.....our back roads, in particular the roads going towards the coast are incredible fun during the day. Treacherous at night though. Deer all over the place. More than one local has gone down from striking a deer that ran out in front of him/her as they were riding at dusk trying to get home from a coast ride. 2 of my riding buddies have been hit by deer at random times and places....one on Hwy 101 on the way to San Francisco one morning. Not way out in the boonies either, but just before the town of San Rafael.

Myself, I've been quite lucky with the wild life. The worst I've ever encountered was a huge pheasant in the UK near RAF Fairford, the home of the Air Tattoo. Largest pheasant I'd ever seen...really. It was easily the size of a turkey....only with feathers nearly as long as a peacock. I only just escaped disaster as the thing flew up from the road way just as I got there. I ducked and felt the bird bounce off the very tip of my wind screen, then the top of my helmet and right into the windshield of the oncoming car.

I only saw the aftermath in my mirror as I kept the throttle on and got the hell away from there.....sean
