Wiki pictures

Shades, since you seem to be taking the lead on the Wiki at the moment, I'm going to throw this to you - if for any of your articles you'd like some properly lit and in focus pictures, I've currently got my bike basically stripped down and I'm performing a lot of basic maintenance - spark plugs, new sprocket/chain, brake pads, bleeding brakes, adjusting headlight, etc, etc.

So, if you'd like any pictures, I'd be happy to take them, and provide them to you to incorporate into the Wiki.

I'd do it myself, but I'm a bit swamped with work and vacation starts next week.

Just offering.

Re: Wiki pictures

Sweet man,
Well, yeah, definitely. There are a lot of writeups that I'd like to do that I don't have any pictures for yet, much less pictures taken by a professional photographer. :P

I was thinking about doing a spark plug writeup today, so maybe if you want to take a few pictures pertaining to that, that'd be nice. I don't have any decent pictures looking down on the engine from above where you can see the spark plugs, so something like that would be nice. And maybe a picture showing how you measure the gap on a spark plug, etc. I can pull together pics/tutorial on how to remove the gas tank if yours is already off, but if you feel like taking pictures showing how to take the tank off then I'd be more than happy to do the cropping and write the words describing the process....

I'd also like to write an article about checking chain tension (including The String Thing), so maybe a shot or two of the two nuts on each side of the swingarm that you use to adjust chain tension would be nice, as well as a shot showing where the chain tension is measured.

The only other thing I can think of immediately would be pictures for the Air Filter Cleaning tutorial; right now it's all text and the one awesome video. So maybe a shot of the rear gas tank mount, then the air filter cover, then the air filter, and the rest I can piece together from existing tutorials.

Oh yeah, and if you can get a picture of the headlight adjuster knob, I'll write that article.

I've never had to bleed my brakes, believe it or not, but if you take pics I'll find someone who has and get them to write an article.

Other than that, I dunno. We've covered just about all of the routine maintenance. Someone requested a tutorial on replacing fork seals, but honestly I've never done it so I wouldn't want to do a writeup anyway.

I'd like to see something on improving/replacing the stock suspension, but again that's something I've never done myself, so I can't very well write a guide for it. :P

If anything else comes to mind, then go ahead and take pictures, and myself or someone else can write a guide for it, but we've already covered just about everything that I know how to do.

In summary, take pics of everything, I'm sure I'll find some way to make use of them all. :P

Re: Wiki pictures

Sounds good. I'll go snap happy tonight or tomorrow, and send them all to you. I'll just take a million generic pictures for now, and as I complete more of my specific work I'll take shots then too.

Re: Wiki pictures

Well, here's the long list of pictures I'd like to take or have taken and upload to various tutorials eventually

1. A picture with the tank off looking at the plugs, with the wires and boots still in place (spark plug tut)
2. A picture with the tank off, looking at the plugs, with the wires and boots off to the side (spark plug tut)
3. A picture with the tank off, looking at the plugs, showing a can of compressed air or a hose from an air compressor being used to clear that little cavity (spark plug tut)
4. A picture of the petcock on our bike to replace the one I stole from some random website, of a different bike (Gas Tank and Petcock)
5. A pair of pictures pointing out the 4 bolts on the lower fairing (oil change)
6. A picture looking at the oil drain bolt and the oil filter, with both still in place (oil change)
7. A picture looking at the oil fill cap (oil change)
8. A side-on picture looking at the chain to document chain slack measurement (chain maintenance)
9. A picture showing the pairs of nuts on the buttplates for the swingarm, used to adjust chain tension.
10. Maybe a picture showing how to remove the seat (Fuel Filter Installation, and basically everything else)
11. A picture showing the rear tank support and pointing at some of the 4 bolts which hold it in place (air filter cleaning)
12. A picture showing the air box cover and some of the 4 bolts which hold it in place (air filter cleaning)
13. A picture showing the air filter in the air box (air filter cleaning)
14. A picture showing the air filter out of the air box, with cleaner being sprayed on (air filter cleaning)
15. A picture showing the air filter out of the air box, with oil being sprayed or spread around (Air filter cleaning)
16. A picture looking down on the bike from the rider's position, showing the knob used to adjust the headlight up/down.
17. A picture showing the bolt under the seat which must be removed to access the battery.
18. A picture showing the +/- battery leads which must be removed to remove the battery.
19. A picture showing the battery levels and how to add DI.
20. A picture showing a battery on a battery tender.
21. A picture showing a fuel hose hooked up to the carb drain nipples, and the drain screw for the carbs.
22. A picture identifying the radiator fill cap.
23. A picture showing a 500R on centerstand with a jack under the oil pan so that both wheels are clear of the ground.

That's it for now I guess. When I get to writing some more tutorials I'll want different pictures. If you feel like taking any of the above pictures, please go for it. Right now it looks like the weather this weekend will be shite, so maybe I'll take some or all of these myself when I'm sitting around with no homework on a rainy sunday afternoon.

Seems like maybe we should make a sticky thread of "Picture Requests," where dragknee and I or anyone else post requests for specific pictures like the above list. Then when people go to do maintenance, if they feel like it, they can glance at the thread and see if there are any requested pictures which they might take. A similar "Writeup Requests" thread might also be a good idea.

Re: Wiki pictures

Shades:
Always glad to help with the Wiki.

I wasn't planning to take my tank off anytime soon... but I am due for an oil change... planning to do one this weekend as a matter of fact.

I'll take a few ones tommorrow.... and get the oil change ones this weekend.

Don't know if we'd need a sticky thread.... as this one seems to be working for now.

where do you want me to post them? - should I just attatch them here??
also - what size do you want them formatted to??
do you have any preference as to landscape vs. portrait??

Re: Wiki pictures

I had uploaded some pics I took while changing my oil last weekend. If you want to peek, they are Za-oilchng-00.jpg through Za-oilchng-06.jpg pick which ones you would like, and admin can delete the rest that aren't used from the backend server if space becomes an issue.

Re: Wiki pictures

Ok. I tracked down all of ZeroAffiliation's pictures, and added them to the article:
https://www.ex-500.com/wiki/index.php..._an_Oil_Change

I'm still looking for:
1. A picture looking at the oil window showing the oil level (maybe unnecessary, but hey, you never know)
2. A picture from the front of the bike showing the drain bolt and the filter, to help people locate the drain bolt.
3. A picture showing a bike with a chin fairing installed so I can point out the 4 fasteners that must be removed to pull off the chin fairing.

Aye, too close. Looking to help people find the window on the bike, as well as view the level.

Re: Wiki pictures

Hey, thanks for the pics. I picked and chose a few to round out the guide, threw in some arrows, and added the pictures accordingly.

https://www.ex-500.com/wiki/index.php..._an_Oil_Change

On an entirely unrelated note, I'm now looking for pics showing chain adjustment. Added my requests to the list above (8, 9).

Re: Wiki pictures

OK. Someone requested a Winterization/Storage wiki page, and I'm also going to be writing a Battery Installation/Maintenance guide, so I've made a few additions to the ever-growing list of pictures to be taken. I'm hoping to get around to finishing with my battery maintenance in the next few days, or this weekend, so hopefully I'll be able to take these pictures myself, but if it is convenient for anyone to take any of the pictures in the list above, then please do and I'll be sure to put them to use!

In case you'd like to see the work-in-progress Winterization/Storage page, it can be viewed here:
https://ex-500.com/wiki/index.php/Win...on_and_Storage

Any input is welcome!

K, I'll get them cropped and uploaded. I have pics of adjusted the spring on the shock. Unfortunately, it's not using the proper tool, a spanner wrench, but using a pair of slip joint pliers instead.
