12K miles ex500 rough start/idle

My ex500 now needs some gas and choke to get started.
I hit the ignition, rev the throttle for half a second, and choke keeps it around 3k rpm. If I don't give it gas it dies immediately.
I take the choke off in a minute or so, but it takes about 10 for the idle to feel smooth.

This developed over the last thousand miles or so.

Can't find an answer on what needs tuning with Google.

Where should I start?

I was afraid you'd say that. Rebuild?

In your case, pilot circuits for sure (very common)

Full boat rebuild depends on year, age of carbs.

Orings and needle viton tips have a service life, about 10 years max, unless problems/issues develop prior.

When warm it'll start up without gas.

It doesn't sound easy for the engine though, and it makes a bit of a 'pow' sound, then gets started.

Given the effort (and cost) in a partial vs full rebuild (carbs are from '99, 12k miles), I might as well invest in a full kit eh?
