hey guys new to the forum! I was just wondering what size hex Cap bolts or screws should I use to replace the crappy screws that are on the float bowl? I have a 1990 ex500 and trying to clean the carbs and all 8 float bowl screws are stripped! I got them out but i was wondering what the sizes were to replace them? Also can i use the same for the diaphragm covers?
The diaphragm ones are going to be a little bit longer 16 mm I think, I did my entire carbs with stainless steel allen heads. Worse case bring the screws with you, my local hardware store had metric in stock so I lucked out, if anything you could order them online.
Np, I know those screws are really soft metal, the stainless steel is a far better replacement, just be careful as not to strip the carbs themselves, that metal is also soft and cheap.
When I did mine I went crazy and did ALL the screws, so I won't have that problem ever, and the carbs look cool as well.
That's right, on my 500 I replaced a lot of the fasteners with stainless steel, carbs, engine, frame , etc.... I've also done most on the 250 as well, see for yourself, it's the small details that really help the looks of a bike.
those are some nice looking bikes! I just got my bike a couple weeks ago so I'm going through all the scheduled maintenance for a bike with the mileage it has. when I finally opened the carbs one of the floats was broken in half so now I'm just waiting for that to come in so I can put those bad boys back together and put them in the bike. Now I'm working on the rusted gas tank!
aka galvanic corrosion....anti-seize on a q-tip.....schmooze either the carbs' threads or the screws before assembling
