Mikuni BDST38 used on 90's carbed Ducati SS and Monster models

Not quite complete as yet, awaiting fuel rail seals (a Suzuki part #, no less!) to re-rack them.

Its no secret that how carbs are exposed to atmosphere in their lifetime (long term outdoor vs indoor storage) is directly correlated to permanent damage and therefore how they react to intense cleaning procedures.

Exposure to moisture or water (bottom of bowls for example, or consistent wet bodies) will leave evidence of corrosion and permanent staining. Factor extreme swings in temps, humidity, frequency of actual running, fuel quality, use of stabilizer treatment (or not)....there is rarely a "gold standard" in 20+ year old carbs, though I must say this particular set is coming out mint.

Brass can be restored for the most part, but even there, permanent scarring can occur. Pictured are his original jets after treatments. I disagree with certain Ducati forum members to automatically replace ALL jets...these are restored as new and cleared to factory spec....thus saving the owner further, needless expense.

They'd be done already...but dumb on my part to forget to reorder Suzuki rail seals for these Mikuni's....I've ordered multiple sets to keep in stock for future use.

And Sean...his Y-2 needle jets are NOT ovaled. Can't explain, perhaps a prior owner previously replaced them?

Just based on some of the things he's written in his thread, I'd agree that someone was conscientious about keeping that bike up at some point in time. Who knows where in the line of "caretakers" that was though.


He is in SoCal which is quite a bit drier than it is here in NorCal.......that could account for some of it....sean

Reminds me of a set of carbs I pulled from a late 90's EX500 parts bike I got several years ago. Somebody somewhere had taken care of it, though it was not the person I got the bike from. Had been sitting outside for a year with the valve cover off after a spectacularly failed head gasket repair job. I was expecting crusty mayhem inside the carbs just like the rust inside both the engine and fuel tank, but when I cracked the carbs open, they looked brand new. Floats weren't even stained. Rebuilt them anyways and they've been on my daily for a couple years now.

to a degree its unpredictable...never know what you'll find. I'm on a set of particularly nasty 250 Ninja carbs today....frozen slides, frozen in place float valves (seat damage TBD), stripped screws, rotted fuel everywhere, brown jet syndrome, vac hoses rotted (total of 6 on the 250) .....

some stuff "in the drink" (ultrasonic)....some awaits blasting...but intense labor nonetheless.

Miraculous...the pilot jets removed without fanfare!

Look at the still installed main jets/emulsion tubes and black pools in the bowls, yuch.

I'll follow up with an after pic in a day or 2.

Work continues on the "CarbSet from the Black Lagoon".... 1 more day needed.

Challenging, but rest assured when done, they will not be recognizable as those posted above....shocking (in a good way) and worth the wait for the owner.

the infamous 250 Ninja "Carbs from the Black Lagoon" or maybe "Carbs BACK from the ....."

Was able to clear all circuits, restore all jets, float valve seats, and all vac hoses but 1 (replaced at no charge from my stock)

Set up, synched, pilot screws set (caps removed), all the usual, blah blah blah.

The owner should be quite happy....without doubt these were destined to... but saved from.... the scrap heap.

Damn fine work.....just my luck you live a continent and one international border away instead of right next door. My neighbor could use your services right now. His snowblower clearly has a partially clogged jet because it will only run with half choke even when its fully warmed up. Carburetors are perishable items, just like lettuce at the supermarket!

Quick question:

Is there anything I can do to help protect my carbs from oxidation? I have to store it outside a few miles from the ocean. I have sprayed some Amsoil MP on it and the frame during the rainy season to help slow down the corrosion. Any tips? Thank you!

No ideas dealing with the exterior... you are doing all you can now. I would suggest, however, Stabil 360 in every tankful....powerful stuff based on their marine formula. Constant outdoor storage is tough, carbs & tank inside & out, tires, rubber, wiring, paint, chrome.... nothing immune, unfortunately.
