Forum weirdness

No, not any member here or anything like that

No, this is seemingly going on with any vertical scope based forum I belong to. It's just a weird thing that began in the last week or so.

There are any number of times that I cruise through the forum without logging in. It might be that I'm at work or I'm just looking to see if anything new has been added to a particular thread or something.

Either way, when I do this, I generally just click on the active topics tab and see what's new. Only for days on end, nothing changes. It appears that no one has posted anything new for that entire time.

Then, I get home and log on, and suddenly there are a dozen new posts or even that many new threads. This has been happening with the other forums I'm on also, not just this one. It also does this on both my home computer as well as my work computer. I've tried just clearing the cache but that seems to not have any effect at all.

I don't know why it suddenly started doing this out of the blue. Never did this before. However, if it is going on for others, that could seriously impact site traffic as no one will bother to log on if it appears there are no new topics or posts to threads that were being casually followed.

As it seems to be affecting both this forum and Ducati dot MS, which are both vertical scope based, my thought is, it must be a vertical scope issue. Intentional (to get more people to log on) or unintentional (code issue or update glitch) it would seem to me that it would actually stop people from logging on as they see nothing new to comment on.....just my thoughts, it may actually be a non-issue for others...........sean

I've seen this before but not recently. I agree that it would significantly affect traffic.

The above reply is a good example of what I'm talking about. I could see there was a reply to my post without logging in. When I clicked on the post to read the response, the response does not appear. I have to log in to read the response.

This is the kind of weirdness I'm talking about. It doesn't do this all the time, but randomly. It doesn't matter if I'm using a desk top at work, or any of the three available computers at the shop. I might not have logged in on one for several weeks and still, I'll get the EX500 active topics page that appears to not have changed since the day before. I get the same when I get online at home on my Surface. Until I log on. Then all the activity is visible. It's just weird. ....sean

The lack of updating when logging on has been happening on my Android phone for a while now. Once I click on one section it all updates. No issues on my home computer though. I'll let the admin team know about it.

Cool.....seems to happen all the time now. Never had issue with it before and if I did, just clicking on a section would update everything. This a different kind of weirdness. For instance, this post continually appears at the top like it is the last thing posted. So long as I'm not logged in anyway. It shows that there has been a response but when I click on it, all that appears is my original post. As soon as I log in, it updates and now I can see all the subsequent posts. It's not a huge deal....just kind of annoying in that little kid in the car "are we there yet" way. ..........sean

I'm not experiencing what you guys are, but I noticed that I can search fine on my work computer (Chrome - Windows 10) but when I go to search the forum with my home computer (Chrome - Windows 7 pro x64), every time i hit the search button, it just brings me to the forum home page and doesn't give any error or indication I had tried to search anything. It was like hitting refresh.

I got a response from admin a couple days ago but didn't want to mention it here until I wrap my head around the response and ask a few more questions. I've been so busy I still haven't gotten there, so I'll mention this now.

We got word a couple weeks ago that they were about implement a change in order to improve the site speed, and that it was tried and proven. When I asked this week if the issues we've been experiencing issues were related to this, I was told, yes. It's the rest of the explanation that I need to clarify.

The good news is, this change is miniscule compared to what we endured a year ago. I hope so, because I wouldn't want to wade through all that again LOL! I'll ask my follow up questions this weekend. Oddly enough, I noticed today that it's working normally for me.

It hasn't changed at all for me. It has to be related to cached memory or something along those lines. My computer here, my surface has been the exact same. If I am not logged in the first post at the top of the page is the one about high octane gasoline equals smelly garage. As soon as I logged in, this thread was at the top.

At work today, the post at the top of the page was the same as yesterdays. As I've changed jobs as well as work computers it cannot be the computer itself. The common denominator in all 5 computers (3 at my previous gig, 1 at my new gig and my home computer) is Windows 10. All are running it.

As I wrote previously, it isn't a huge deal...just a minor irritation in that, I do not log on while I am at work. I like to drop in during my lunch to see what's new. It's just kind of a bummer that I can't until I get home and can log on. However, it wasn't until I found that out that began to log on daily. If I saw the same post at the top, I assumed there had been no activity on the forum since my last log on.

Hence, I might drop by a couple of times in a week just see, and not log on nor contribute because it appears there isn't anything new to check out. If I came to that conclusion, many others dropping by having not logged on might do the same thing. Worse for those not members who drop by to look around. I assume if they returned it would appear nothing had changed since they last visited.

Just my two cent, but if I found that in a forum I was looking at possibly joining, it would completely change my mind. I'd assume it was a dead forum and look around for one that I could see recent activity as well as informed responses to questions. This is the reason I started this thread. How many new members might we miss out on if they are experiencing the same thing I am? How much reduction in site traffic is this causing?

Those are serious questions. I don't have the answers to them but I can draw conclusions based on what I am experiencing......thanks for looking into it K-woppa......sean
