No joke....in the past RR's have been mounted within the airbox (!) in the interest of cooling air flow!
RR's have historically been mounted all over....under tail sections, up front under triples, side mount, under tank, under seat....
In any event, I'll custom make a harness based on your particular circumstances.

Herk-thanks for posting comparative readings and temps! Really drives home the point.
The old design shunt type regulator sheds heat by design ....as it ages working harder..nearing 15v, the resulting intense heat can internally damage the regulator, harden associated wiring, burn connectors and damage the battery via overheating (commonly evidenced by boiling away the electrolyte) ...even blowing bulbs.... its overcharging the whole system.
Obvious that the lower Mosfet voltages are more than sufficient to supply power (system wide) and recharge your battery...meanwhile producing much less heat...a longer life all around with the Mosfet = long term RELIABILITY.
Mosfet conversion is now a common, widely known upgrade to many bikes, not only the EX.

Just finished installing a MOSFET regulator. Here's what I got for voltages. Before:
No load. 12.5V
Temp. 140 f (on reg)
Temp. 81 f
Electronics HATE heat so that by itself makes the $ worth it.
BTW I have a ONE regulator for sale, cheap

|mischief||I had an early BMW F800gs which was somewhat notorious for fried stators. The unofficial fix was a series rr so the stator wasn't running at full capacity all the time. But, yeah, shindengen is the name. I used a CE on the bmw and it seemed to do the trick too|

Shindengen Mosfets have a remarkable track record, you'll be well served. Upper 13's a perfectly acceptable charging rate....
Folks should be aware doing comparisons..inexpensive, junk far east knockoffs flooding ebay...avoid like the plague. A guy on a VFR got 2 1/2 *hours* out of one before failure.
I'm dealing strictly genuine Shindengen (Japanese) Mosfets. I'm going into my 7th trouble free season on both mine.

Sorry for my assumption ducatiman, totally my mistake. I thought it was a really good deal for a series rr
A quick check with a multimeter at the battery shows that my voltmeter is reading about .5 volts low so I should be getting 13.7 - 13.8 at speed, I guess that's good enough

13.2-3 is about right at idle, as revs rise, it should peak high 13's, very near 14.
Its not a series type RR...still a shunt but more modern design....super reliable. The EX rr was designed in the 80's...remained unchanged during the full run of EX right on up to '09, the last year.

|mischief||Top reading on my voltmeter was 13.2-13.3, the same as with the oem rr. I've never checked accuracy so it could be a little off. I have noticed that my brake light knocks about .8 volts off of that. I don't know if that is normal or not, my stator might be a little fried which is the main reason I opted for the series rr over the shunt style|

^ you will be reducing airbox volume, dunno its affect on running, and to what degree... something you'll have to experiment with, fully reversible of course.
And 2 more standard, side mount Mosfet kits are in stock, harnesses built, ready for shipment.

|mischief||Thanks, but I think I'll be ok on the length, better to be too long than too short. Do you see any problems with making a plate to replace the airbox cover and mounting the rr to it? I can't really think of any, and it's reversible if there are|

Note if you need a shorter harness, i'll make to your desired OAL....and do a "trade in" on the longer tail harness.
I'm easy to work with, cognizant of the complexities we sometimes encounter.

|mischief||So, since I've shortened the tail there isn't room to put it there. I'm thinking of removing the left side airbox cover and making an aluminum cover plate to go in it's place and mounting the rr on the plate|
