Hy everybody!

I like to do a modification in my GPZ 500.
I love the lokking of the belt drive, and its unique looking.
I research i lot, and i like to ask all of you, as anibody do something similar.

So here is a gpz 500 with a gpx 600 rear swingarm and disc brake. This is an earlier modification for better suspension and braeking. I don't like to change these things. First i think about, can i change the chain drive to a blet drive from the LTD 450/EN 500, but these bikes have wider swingarms for the wider wheel and for the belt sprocket. So this is a back street.
After this i saw i gpz 305 bel drive. It's under 30 hp but it have slim belt drive sprocket.

First problem: is it sprocket rubber is the same the gpz500/ gpx 600 wheel rubber?
Second: How wide the gpz 305 belt sprocket, Can i change my chain sprocket to this?
Third: Can the belt drive of the 25 hp gpz 305 can handle my 48 hp GPZ 500-s power or torque?

Did anybody this mod? I tell again, i like to do this mod just for fun and to make a uniqe motorcycle.

I would think you could do some machine work to make a pulley, or get it done more than likely? Then you could use what ever belt you needed. The other problem would be the cover for the transmission sprocket, you would have to redo that to make more room, then you will need a tensioner. In my opinion the point of no return would be so far off it would not be worth it to even try, even if it was just to be a unique novelty. I have never used a belt drive or even considered it so my opinion is bias I want to say I encourage you to try and see how it goes, and maybe someone has done it some where, even on another smaller or similar bike. Just put on your engineer hat to do it.

The problem is the rear pulley. To wide, but it has an inner metal piece. Maybe its need to be cut thiner. If i ever try it, i need to find the perfect size to not touch the rear tire and the swingarm. If i ever do it i will post it.

other problem. If i change the mid piece size the center of the pulley move to, so it will be not in one line with the front. somehow i figure out how to do.

hi. yes it is possible with thought. I had the same thought while building the EX cruiser. highly possible using mostly EN variant parts. rear wheel sprocket is the most problematic aspect. all doable though. good luck if you decide to proceed.

I have a Yamaha cruiser that is a belt drive and I love the smoothness and quietness, so I have seriously considered this conversion on the EX.

Could mostly be done with EN500 Vulcan parts. 1995 and older, 1996 and newer switched to chain drive. You could also use EN450 parts, but they would be really old, also the 450 swingarm and belt were shorter. Based on some measurements I've found the EN500 belt would be about the right length with the EX swingarm.

The output shaft for the transmission, which connects to the front sprocket, is not the same.

This is the transmission for the EX-500, top left corner is the splines that connect to the chain sprocket.

This is the transmission for the belt-drive EN-500, top left corner is the splines that connect the front pulley, the shaft is much longer.

You can use the EN500 front pulley for a belt on the EX/GPZ but you will have to swap the output shaft of the transmission.

After the post i spoke an LTD 450 owner, and we realized, its need to be change to much parts to do this converzation. So this is a faild project. MAybe the next.

well said @bpe it is only fail if you try. it is also the reason my cruiser isn't belt drive also
