How would it work if the lists were inverted? That is put the last responce at the top. Maybe some way the original post could remain on top too. My scrolling finger gets tired looking for the latest comment on some of the long threads.

As for the inverted list, the first page will have the newest post as the very first post and the original post as the very last.
As for where the original post appears, that's more of a layout coding issue. I'm sure it's been done on SMF boards before, but a lot of that code is original home brewed code.
however in the meantime, there is always the option of clicking the "NEW" icon next to a thread that has received a post you haven't viewed yet. That will send you directly to the very latest reply in that thread. also there is the "Show unread posts since last visit" link at the very top left of every page (under the EX500 logo in red). there is also the option to subscribe to every new thread that gets created so that it shows up in your email's inbox.
just some ideas.

Have you tried the "Go Down" link located next to the page numbers at the top of a thread? It'll jump you right down to the bottom of the page...

or hitting the end key? that takes you straight to the end of the page.
though, i'm surprised that by clicking the "NEW" button doesn't take you to the latest posting. does for me.

Just press this arrow and it will take you to the last post in the thread.

or... you can click "Profile" on the top menu bar....
then on the left, click "Look and Layout Preferences"....
then check the box that says "Show most recent posts at the top"
Not a big fan personally.... but it'll put the last posts in a topic at the top, and the first posts at the bottom.
