I did use the search tool, but my question is a little different. I know I need to use a high flash point solvent, but I was wondering which one to use. Someone has suggested letting the filter soak in gasoline (I'm a little iffy on that one). And other cleaning solvents would errode the plastic lining around the filter. Anyone have the cheapest, safest and most efficient solvent they can recommend?

I think the easiest for you would be to go buy the K&N recharging kit (I think it is called this, I'm too lazy to go look at the name in my garage). It comes with cleaner and the spray on oil. Only about $10.00 or so and should be at any autoparts store or even Wally world.

Definitely get the K&N recharge kit. i wouldnt recommend any other way of doing it.

be aware though, that it takes a while to clean the filter(drying time anyway) so be sure not to plan on riding that day. and dont over oil!!! here's how i do it, which is pretty much the instructions that come with the recharge kit.

1 - rinse out loose debris, shake off excess water
2 - spray on cleaner, let set for a few minutes
3 - rinse, shake off excess water
4 - let dry(set it in direct sunlight to speed this up)
5 - oil it
6 - reinstall
