I recently bought a 2002 ex500 with 7,3xx miles. It ran great when I bought it, until I started going through and replacing the routine maintenance parts.
new spark plugs - NGK D9EA
new battery - NAPA Power Sport
changed oil/filter - T6 synthetic 5w-40
When I went to ride the bike, It had a hard start, cranked a bit then fired up. A mile down the road, it died. Another long starting (holding the ignition button in for a 5 or so seconds) and it started. then on the way back same thing died. Luckily got it back to my garage.
Then went a little further into the bike
took apart the air box, cleaned it up, air filter was good
took out the carb, it was clean, but I made it cleaner, cleaned the jets (so I could see light,) put them back in the way I read on here.
Tried to start it up and it cranked and cranked and nothing.
So I started retracing my steps, checking everything I changed
bought an ignition spark tester, both sides work
bought a compression tester, both cylinders get above 150 after a few cranks
opened up the starter clutch case, everything moves right
kickstand switch tested
checked the main fuse and the ignition fuse, fine
