FOG PLEASE COME INSIDE- Cone Filter Manifold

Hey Fog, My name is Matt. Ive looked around the board and quickly realized youre one of the most knowledgeable people concerning the ex500. And because of that I wanted your input and thoughts on real life application- Im a gear head at heart with a nerdy math mind and a degree in engineering and have been designing custom intake and exhaust set-ups for a couple years. Overall from your input and others opinions the Cone filter setup makes the ex500 fall flat on its face, and from a simple math point of view the basic reasons is the air would cause to much turbulance to develope a charged static flow(lack of coordination between between air speed, ample stable air, and valve opening timing) and have a lack of necessary required stable air to fill each cylinder. To get to my point however, have you ever attempted to use various lengths of pipes to be able to utilize pod filters?

Just to lighten the post ... Would it work if i fitted cone filters to my bike then cut two big holes in the air box and then refitted it ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) :D
Yes , but you must first Hypnotize the bike and make it "Think" it has an air box

Around here it seems to work the other way round. The bike Hypothesizes it's owner. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ "your under my spell do as I say, I need a Muzzy. Get me a Muzzy and I'll be as fast as a ZX10. "

My bad, I missed the part about degreeing to factory specs. I thought you were saying to. degree them to allow for more overlap without changing the cams.

Just out of curiosity though, why all the hostility?

And I never expect the 500 to be a power house.

Picked mine up as a project for fun. And if I can improve things along the way I will

Its all in fun, dont take things personal.
superslow, people that have been on this forum a while have seen wayyy too many people with thoughts along the lines of "i read that if you do *insert favorite useless modification here* to my bike, i get a crazy amount of power". its hard for them to take anyone with ideas for power mods seriously. even if the ideas arent as ridiculous as the average ones.
@rv93

Oh I see. I had a feeling there had been several others who had brough up a mod similar to this and never followed through. Will continue chugging away anyway!!

Have a good day all!
Sorry man if what i posted up set you but like i said in the post i was just trying to lighten the mood.

I was reading through the thread hoping maybe end result you were going to have some break through. What ever became of your attempts? Even if they were good ild still like to know why. I'm sure after this long probably dont even have any of the info or the bike for that matter. But interested still.
what happened well !! exactly the same as all the other attempts since the forum began. probable failure or partial success that didn't warrant the effort put in. that's why no one takes the pods idea seriously.
in brief can pods be used on the EX successfully no idea as no one has done it Yet.
in theory yes they can but not with stock carbs that changes the whole dimension of the scenario but as soon as you do all previous data goes out the window and there no data to support them.
your back to the drawing board and square one exactly where those 20 Japanese engineers were back in 1985 only without the resources and back up they had. it won't stop people trying of course but every thread started never came to a conclusion or answer of any kind. including this one. Amen.

I kinda figured that's what happened. I'm a rookie here and I've known better to think I'll reinvent anything....now possibly point out something to make someone explain it for me...absolutely. But thats much different than the manu threads of read that end this same way....."I'm gonna"..."how'd it go"..........no follow up. I wish there was some sort of way to at least get something better than my stock air filter though. Haven't had any look in my searches.

I have the answer to the pod usefulness....cusefulness....cut it on one side.....cut and circle out....flatten...install like stock air filter.....ghetto k&n
I don't know who resurrected this old thread. but since it was addressed to me.let me try to end it.
Pods don't work can't be made to work.
I published everything that works to improve this MC SHORT OF major engine work even there there is nothing to be had

You can buy a high flow UNI foam filter for the stock air box for under $30. Not a ghetto K&N but a poor man's one. it won't last forever like a K&N but will last a good five years. Flow and filtration are comparable. I've used them for a long time now

+1 for UNI. I’ve used them for some time on other bikes I own. Still use K&N on my Aprilia. One Ducati currently has a Piper Cross filter the other is getting a K&N but currently has a BMC. Dunno if those suppliers make one for the EX-500 but probably wouldn’t hurt to research them and see.

I did. My bad. But still. The only possible and logical explanation would to rework a pod into a normal filter that your wise self have deemed valuable. And that's strictly sarcasm and smartassedness at best. I'm just having issues doing your infamous fog box mod the way i want with a proper k&n because they apparently aren't made for our wonderful bikes anymore....any chance someone could throw me dimensions and maybe I can find out if some other k&n just doesn't list our bike anymore but is the same size maybe?

Have you been using any of those on a gen2 500? I just want to make sure i stay within FOG's parameters for this MOD. I know he listed either stock k&n and another. So i feel like unless he seems to think or say other than those than I can't really use it as he has suggested.
