FOG PLEASE COME INSIDE- Cone Filter Manifold

Hey Fog, My name is Matt. Ive looked around the board and quickly realized youre one of the most knowledgeable people concerning the ex500. And because of that I wanted your input and thoughts on real life application- Im a gear head at heart with a nerdy math mind and a degree in engineering and have been designing custom intake and exhaust set-ups for a couple years. Overall from your input and others opinions the Cone filter setup makes the ex500 fall flat on its face, and from a simple math point of view the basic reasons is the air would cause to much turbulance to develope a charged static flow(lack of coordination between between air speed, ample stable air, and valve opening timing) and have a lack of necessary required stable air to fill each cylinder. To get to my point however, have you ever attempted to use various lengths of pipes to be able to utilize pod filters?

as above the uni filter is the best you will get, it flows a little better than the stock one, but K&N's seem to be unavailable now, least I couldn't find one. don't forget to oil it when fitting.

No. The EX-500 currently in my possession is an incomplete basket case, now with a dummy engine. My point is, K&N isn’t the only brand of freer flowing air filter around. Better flow than stock, maybe as good as K&N.

I never felt the need for anything beyond stock for my EX when it was a daily rider. Other than better brake pads and tires. I could push that bike to the point of feeling the chassis flex so much it felt like it had a hinge in the middle.

If I needed to go faster or handle better, I had/have faster better handling bikes. None of which can I push to the point of feeling chassis limitations.
After a quick 2 minute search on the interwebz I found that Dennis Kirk carries a UNI OEM replacement air filter for $30 p/n NU-2368 and a HiFloFiltro OEM replacement filter HFA-2503 for $14.95. Those are for the Gen 2s. The UNI is also available on Amazon for $27.50.

HiFlo information shows the same p/n for the air filter from ‘87-2009. BMC no longer makes one for the EX-500 and all the K&N website shows is pods for anything older than around ‘96 and all EX500s.(you probably knew that already) I searched Piper Cross also but found nothing on the site I visited.

Oh man. Thank you greatly for searching more into it. I did gind the uni and the plugs for the COPS mod. Between the uni and the hiflofiltro...which do you think would be the more proper choice? Im still hoping to encounter a used k&n possibly thats not beat to hell at least. But in the mean time...
I don't know who resurrected this old thread. but since it was addressed to me.let me try to end it.
Pods don't work can't be made to work.
I published everything that works to improve this MC SHORT OF major engine work even there there is nothing to be had
Buy a faster Motorcycle!!!

FOG. Sorry to ask here but I cant figure out how to actually message you directly. But how do i go about buying a set of FOG bones off you my good sir? I think with my height and then having the ol lady on the back from time to time it may be a perfect mod after reading many things about em. Thank you
sorry Fog's retired no more fog bones for sale.
On this subject , anyone interested in manufacturing FOG bones. I give you the design dimensions and you can call them whatever you wish

Oh I'm sorry I didn't realize that. I do have a metal fabrication shop that may take on at least making a set for me if you wouldn't mind it. I don't think i could get into getting them made and sent out but I could always try and run it by them.

I dunno for sure. Based on the pics alone I’d say the UNI is probably the better choice if you’re going to FOG Mod the airbox. The HiFlo Filtro looks more like the factory product so maybe better if you intend to run the airbox as stock.

Those thoughts are based solely on the pics, not on hard data like CFM or Service life versus the factory filter.

So I have a good news bad news situation I think...i contacted k&n and specfically said exactly what i was looking for..."sheet/paper" STYLE filter...absolutely cant have pod...blah blah blah...they responded with they arent paper they are cotton....yeah i know that just meant the style...or they said you could use a pod....no actually i cant hence explaining i can't and slightly why....but anyway...they also mentioned universal filters based on size needed which i didnt know about but i decided i should probably take mine out and measure it....and to my surprise...im a time wasting SOB for not looking at my filter and taking PO saying cant use aftermarket stay with stock air filters as theres a stock air filter...WRONG.... Discontinued k&n already there in the air box....rookie mistake...look at my stuff...know my stuff before trying to waste money...
BUT...thats the good news...i think the bad news is...i could smell strong gas on the filter and appeared to be oil+gas in the air box...any ideas on how...why...concerning... Or is it simply the unsysnced carbs and maybe the k&n recharge oil? The bike did sit before PO got ahold of it and he had to do some sort of wiring and got the carbs stable enough to perform mediocre. Also put pictures up of the beautiful relief that i will have an official OG triple OG FOG MOD BOX with k&n....its just a bit dirty ATM.
And other than the recharge that "gasket" looks like hell. Anything i should do about that gasket/seal?

Also looking for tank protectors stumbed acrossed this IN STOCK as of right this minute. Don't understand why the change

yeah good news one item you can tick off the list, just clean it up oil it (lightly) and stick it back in, the oil in the air box is normal just wipe it out. is from the crankcase breather. it enters the box as mist and collects in the btm nothing to be concerned about.
fuel smell could just be just out of tune carbs but there will always be "that smell" to some degree, after all it is a enclosed airbox connected to the carbs.

Oh good good. Very thankful to hear that about yhe fuel. The oil part I was thinking it was normal just because being a mopar tech i see it in our 3.6l and hemis all the time due to pcv valve.
Cleaning it I would think for now until i get k&n recharge kit back from my boy I could maybe use dawn dish soap and a nylon brush lightly between the fins ti get the debris out? And then do a full proper clean with the k&n kit?

Good evening FOG
Been searching for this comment all day. Is there any chance I could get those dimensions off you and see if the metal Fab that just opened up could do a set or 2 up for me? Depending on price and stuff I may be able to keep your part going. Thank you and let me know please.
