Hey guys,

I'm looking for clip-ons and I have a 89 500 ex. I thought the fork tube was 36mm, but I can't find any for sure answer. Would I need 36 or 37mm clip-ons? Thanks

from the 'guide de la moto 1990' (motorcycle guide from 1990) they say 37 mm

2nd gen (1994 and up) are 42mm I think ???

second gen is 37 mm, first is 36. it was a refinement for whatever reason.

so my first gen is 36mm right? 94 and up is 37mm correct?

Thanks!

Yes, your 1st gen = 36mm. If you go with the clip ons that slide over the tubes, make sure you check your clearances after you've mounted them. I've heard some say that with clip ons directly on the forks they might hit the tank, leaving a dent or smashing your hand.
