Gas in oil

Hey guys so I have a 96 ex-500 that I got last fall and have been trying to get running right. I did air filter, oil change and filter, spark plugs When I first got it, It would run really rough off the choke and with it on it would run okay but could only get up to 5-6k rmp, have always had a little white smoke out the left exhaust. I work at a boat marina and my co worker offered to help do a quick carb clean to it. So I drove it in (15-20 minute ride) with how it was running and had to drive with the choke on. I had been keeping an eye on my oil and I notice when i got to work there was more oil the sight glass then it had before, my crankcase and left exhaust was dripping black liquid that smells like straight fueI, crankcase had a bit of an oil smell but More so fuel. checked it my oil and it smells of gas did my carb job, oil change again, took it on a few 10-20 minute rides to the store. Been
keeping an eye on my oil and now my crankcase and left exhaust still leak, and my oil smells like gas again I've read up on it a bit but that sounds like that would be a float sticking or the petcock right? Any help would be greatly appreciated would love to be able to actually ride it and not worry about blowing it up.

a simple carb "cleaning" differs from my full carb "refurb" .......in that paying strict attention to certain internal carb functions is critical. Obviously your co-worker is not familiar with those functions. New float valves are an essential change on a now 27 year old bike. There is more, but i'll defer..... other than to offer my services.

correct. quick carb jobs never work or cure any issues.

Your float needles are not sealing, and gas is laeking past them regardless of the position of the float itself. Could be the float needle itself (likely) or the seat.
  • Remove the carbs and replace the float needles with quality replacements.
  • Clean the seat area.
  • Set the float height 17mm as a good starting point.
  • Adjust the floats to get a perfect height using a clear tube held against the carb body.

The carbs can be wet-tested to ensure a good repair without having to be installed on the bike. I simply set my carbs upright and connect to a fuel source to test the integrity of the float needles sealing as intended.

The man works wonders with carbs. Well worth the little bit of loot to know for a fact your carbs are proper.

Not sure if this comes up on these bikes but on other bikes, Petcock failure CAN dump gas into your carbs via the vacuum hose so if the carbs are leaning t'ward the engine, that'll do it. Otherwise leaning, it can run back into the airbox....

There's a diaphragm that separates gas from vacuum inside the petcock and they can get old...if this has happened to you, I need say that while rebuild kit for petcocks are available, they seem to have a 50% success rate...IMO, the new little o-ring on the plunger not sealing on the original petcock casting. Specific to this rebuild kit failure, this last won't be noticed where floatneedles and seats are good, but where they are not, you will still have gas in oil .

i have purposely sourced/utilize a softer rated oring in this particular application. So far so good.
