You could rotate the engine over backwards counter clock wise (thats the way it turns over) with a socket on the end of the timing cover and just wait for the cam lobes to point up, stick a screwdriver inside the spark plug hole to verify that its TDC and wiggle the valve (use your feeler gauges and proceed to use the lock nut) your over complicating things here. Just my two cents and hope any info helps you oot. Peace

You're going to want to rotate it clockwise, because that's the way it turns over (viewing from the left side of the bike).

I forget sometimes, what I generally do is get all the ancillary stuff of and then just bump the starter a CH and see what direction the cams spin, then I just do it that way👍
