ok, just changed the air filter, and removed the air recirculator thingy (to reduce, if not altogether remove popping from exhaust).

When removing the old air filter, which was a UNI btw, there was a puddle of red liquidunder the filter. the only thing i can come up with is the UNI's are an oiled media, and that the red stuff was the oil? likely becasue of over-oiling? im going to clean the carbs completely as im sure they are all gunked up.

Bingo. The red filter oil need only be applied in a very light coat and to the outside area ONLY. Personally the only advantage of the reusable filters is they are reusable. If you live in a hot (100+) enviroment I would sack the afterrmarket stuff completely as the oil will turn to liquid and run off just sitting still.

Aren't the stock filter "reusable"? If you know a dry paper throwaway filter that fits, fess up, I frigging hate cleaning filters

So I guess we overlooked the possibility or crankcase ventilation blow by? Could be engine oil.
