got a question, does the base on the 650 mirrors come off/un-bolt? I have a 1st gen that has the bigger base, I want the 650 mirrors, so I was going to unbolt them from the base and bolt them to my bases. Tried looking online but can find anything to prove/disprove this. Thanks

2007 Ninja 650R mirrors for my Ninja 500R

2007 Ninja 500R Gold
My first Mod = Mirrors
What we already know. Bikes from Asia are designed for riders that are a buck 25 well I am double that (2bucks and half $). They are also designed for a rider at anywhere from 5' 3" to 5' 8" I am 6' their shoulder width is much less than mine as well.
Bought my bike brand new and so I decided to always treat her right
I followed the break-in schedule to the letter.... almost
Well this was making it hard to run at 55mph
So while on the back roads I was running 45mph
After a couple of weeks of getting spooked by drivers that were in way to much of a hurry
They would pass me and cut in on me into my lane long before they had passed me fully
And somehow that was to tell me I was going to slow?
I could not even tuck my elbow and see behind me using the stock mirrors
So these drivers really freaked me out

When i went to the dealer for my mirrors they tried to sell me cheese ball $15 bar-end mirrors?
Ok so now what do i do with the stock mount location?
And how well will these $15 ones hold up?
Please only show me cheapo if I ask for cheapo, I want safe gear.
Something that will not shake off at 100MPH (track day only of course) and has at the minimum the same quality standard as factory equipment.
I took my stock mirror off my bike and lined it up on the showroom 650
They lined up ok
I could not believe that the dealer had never heard of someone requesting this or the fact that no one there had ever read or tried this before? I could not be the only fat guy on a 50?
Had to order them cost me $110
Later I found them on-line for half that including shipping
Oh well, at least I had them on their way and within a week I was riding safe with full viz behind me
The stock 2007 500 and 650 100% interchange for all mounting holes and rubber from what I found. Best resource is dealer showroom if you can find a dealer that is willing to take the time to help out. [/color]

Well you learned a lesson... don't buy overpriced crap from dealerships.

And FFS I have no clue whatsoever why anyone follows the break-in procedure if it means not being safe on the road. It's almost asking new riders to pay more attention to their RPMs than the current road situations, and if you're driving slower than you should be because of it, you're not doing yourself any favors.

Well, like I said, Japanese people aren't really smaller than me. I'm not sure what Kawi is thinking when they design mirrors. I also have a grey market Japanese tractor. It is perfect for me. But, taller/bigger people are scrunched on the platform.

Hey us 1st gen bikes still need info on better mirrors for our bikes if anyone has any ideas.
I haven't bothered to get 650 or 250 mirrors because I made the stock ones work "well enough". I turned them inwards so I could see behind me in the extreme outer edges of the mirrors. Then, I added blind-spot convex stick-on mirrors like this:

I can see beside me with the stick-ons and a sliver of what's behind me with the stock mirrors. Not perfect, but acceptable and very cheap (couple bucks each from Shopko/KMart/Wal-Mart/Target/etc).

I agree that while your method is cheap, I don't agree that it's acceptable. Perhaps you have a skinnier profile than even me at 5'6" 160lb, but that doesn't cut it for me.

Let's meet again some day but near a Home Depot or hardware store. I'm sure I could find a solution for you on mirror extenders. After 17 years of living in this old house I can solve damn near any problem. I've managed to create some pretty complicated woodwork in order to match up weird angles and, in one case, to run my kitchen plumbing through the kitchen instead of in the crawlspace. I made a pretty complex baseboard to hide it in.

Seriously, I could do it. I call my place Patchwork Farm because of all the stuff I've had to come up with over the years.

Bored out of work mathematician here! Needs problems to solve, lol!

Ok I ordered my pair of ninja 650 mirrors (Emgo), I will let all you 1st gen guys and gals know if I can make them work, I should be getting them next week, I'll update with news and photos

Ok got the mirrors, you have to change the base out, in doing so you must grind down the end of the mirror just a little 2 mm if that. I love the new mirrors a must do upgrade for the ninja, and now it can be done on the 1st gen with a little work. I'm sorry for the lack of pics but my camera was dead so no pics right now, if someone needs some I can get some later. now I'm going out for a ride to enjoy the mirrors. BTW if anyone needs a pair of 2nd gen mirror bases let me know ;D

Hello,

Just wanted to thank you all for the good advice. We picked up an EX for my wife last week and the first thing she yelled through the Scala was "I can't see anything in the mirrors!". One set of 650R mirrors later she is a happy camper.

Did have to reverse the stem in the mount, not sure why but it worked and we have a full range of adjustment.
