Correction on my previous post...Arai did supply a helmet for the Motorcyclist helmet safety article. Others who did too were:AGV, Fulmer, HJC, Icon, Pep Boys, Schuberth, Scorpion, Shark, Suomy, Vemar, and Z1R. So if you're in the market for a new helmet that article might be worth reading. ninjamon

My opinion is that you don't see those helmets on racers because they're not willing to fork out the big advertising dollars like Arai, etc. Read the Motorcyclist article on helmet safety and you'll see that some of the less expensive helmets proved to be the most protective of your head. For some reason Arai, Shoei, and a few others did not participate in that study in spite of repeated requests by the magazine to do so. Bottom line is that the helmet manufacturers are not paying the racers for the endorsements...the motorcyclists who buy the helmets at those inflated prices are. Respectfully, imho. ninjamon
All fine except you can find AGV gear on racers heads, too. ;)

Love how light & comfy my suomy vandal is but it definitely wouldn't rank it as quiet. Guess its really a trade off on what you want most out of a helmet. I've been looking at the some of the shark helmets too(I love gear, perhaps a little too much...). A lot of times I will look at a site with user reviews(like kneedraggers) to get an idea of what other people think of the item then go find it on clearance wherever I can. Since I haven't actually worn a bunch of different helmets at high speeds, how much of difference is quiet vs not quiet? I'm assuming with wind blowing around your head like crazy they all have some noise. Is there a big range or is it just a couple of decibels?

The Shoei RF1000 was specifically designed to be the quietest helmet on the market with touring/long distance riding in mind. The X-11 is louder than the RF-1000 and more expensive. That's because the X-11 has better ventilation and is more aerodynamic. I had a Cycle Gear executive (my boss's boss) compare the two. He said, "The RF-1000 is the quietest helmet on the market. Your ears will be ringing if you use it on the freeway, but that's what earplugs are for. In contrast, your ears will be ringing with an X-11 even with earplugs in."

Arai's are just straight up loud. The only reason I've ever heard of anyone buying a 2nd Arai was because of fit. Never noise level, never ventilation, never weight.

My HJC AC-10 is loud over 40mph. If I'm going to be in town zipping around at 30 mph then I dont wear plugs. If I know I"m going to be on the highway or back roads I use them, otherwise I can't hear for 20 minutes after my ride.

I've never had anything quieter so I can't compare, but the helmet is a large and is a little too big for my head. Under 30 I dont hear wind, but I do hear lots of engine noise so I know it's not sealing out noise levels very well.

Full face helmets will break your neck and kill you even if you don't crash. They have been known to leap off the shelf and attack riders.Just ask any harley guy(most of them are scientific experts, they don't just rely on the loud mouth on the next bar stool).Conversely, the half shell beanie helmets sold as novelty items (non DOT) will shatter at the slightest impact, thereby allowing your skull's natural defences to absorb the shock.Combine this with loud pipes and there is really no way that you can be killed on a bike.

^ you forgot to mention that full face helmets also blind you. The destroy the rods and cones that allow peripheral vision!

Mr. REDKOW97

You are so right!!! not only peripheral vision but day and night vision as well! (cones and rods) and mental awareness also!!

My God Man who would deny that bugs hitting you in the face and eyes allows you to remain focused on the task at hand after preaching manly hood and needed safety at the watering hole??

A friend my dad rode with once got a junebug in the mouth at 50 mph. He went into the ditch head over heels.

If he had have been wearing a full face helmet he never would have gotten this valuable lesson in how to survive a crash caused by junebug attack! All hail the shorty!!

My Arai Quantum and HJC AC10 were not too different in noise level. Can't say if they were actually quiet helmets, but good compared to some of the much earlier stuff I've used. A warning though, the Suomy Spec1 is obnoxiously loud. Fits my head better than anything else I've tried. Doesn't lift or push back at speed. But is so loud I've gone back to the AC10 for most street riding and use the Suomy for short hops and the track.

I have a 2006 Shoei RF1000. Black. The color reflects all sounds and protects me from electric magnetic radio waves emitted by Aliens. I would rate it a 8/10 for quietness. I also use a neck gaiter that I tuck under the chin guard. That and foam earplugs really make it quiet. If I don't do this I get ringing in my ears after riding.

i'm gonna have to call BS on this . you didn't mention wearing any foil , or the government reading your thoughts .....
Wait a minute, I think he might actually be on to something. The aliens could be working with the government as outsourced labor. If so, they might be taping thoughts that could possibly be of interest to the government. Now seeing as the helmet is black, and according to Kanye, George Bush doesn't care about... nevermind ;D

I've got the Scorpion EXO 700.Did'nt like it at first, but now that it's broken in,it fits great.I would'nt call it cheap (paid 190),more like mid-priced.With all the vents open it's kinda noisey;turn your head and it whistles like a flute.I keep all the vents except the chin closed.

It still fogs up.I'm sure earplugs would help, tho I don't wear em.The new Scorp (evo1000,I think)has a flip down sun-shield.HJC makes one like that too.A buddy of mine got one.I tried it on and liked it alot.Have'nt seen him since he bought it,so can't tell you guys if he likes it long-term.If I didn't have so many helmets,I'd own that HJC.

how about the no-fog shield , and would earplugs block the noise . i really like these helmets although nothings wrong with my 2 shoei'
I have the exo 700 as well , I like it but it dose seem to be buffeted by wind more than my Nolan ,it dose not fog any more than my other , but as I said before I thought it was quiet, but as head shapes are different with every person ,what works well for me may be crap to you . I like the vents in it as they will move some air , but I'm a smoker so I ended up getting the Nolan x-lite since its a modular ,just more convenient and it has the nifty flip down tinted sunscreen .I had tried all the modular helmets at cycle gear and couldn't find one I liked there ,so ended up ordering from a site that also let you have a 30 day trial like cycle gear dose.

i dont comprehend why in a state with a helmet law, guys will wear non dot approved helmets to look like they are wearing a helmet. whats the point? if you have to wear one wouldnt you want it to actually do something? i mean who are the rebelling against or spiting?

The non-dot helmets don't have foam and padding,so they fit closer to the head and look better. With these posers looks are everything.Plus it's all about the bad boy tough guy ****.Although I don't see how leather tassles make you look tough.Compare these "badasses" with a guy that hits 190 mph on the banking at Daytona two feet from the wall with the rear spinning and sliding. Now THAT'S a tough guy.

Yeah they look real tough in their leather chaps ,haha, I always get a kick out of seeing guys in them , girls now are another story ,maybe thats why I think they look like **** when I do see them.
