I know this information was on the old EX500 site, but I can't remember what I need.

The time has come to change the sprockets and chain on my bike. I have bought a Sunstar front sprocket with 15 teeth, and I plan on getting the matching Sunstar rear sprocket with 42 teeth. Since I'm changing sprocket sizes, what size chain do I need? Also, what brands and types of chains do most riders suggest/use?

Thanks in advance!

yes, 520, NOT 530. a 530 would be suited more for a MUCH LARGER bike, in the 1k-Busa class, not an EX500, where you'd be losing performance due to the weight of that chain.

i know this thread is old old old, but ive found that its better to buy your chains longer than you think you'll need.

its only about two dollars more to get a 110 or 114 link chain. personally id rather pay 2 dollars and have some chain left over than to find out that my chain is one link too short, and have to go to the bike shop to get another one.

My sprocket come stock with 17 in the front an 42 in the rear. I am going to order a 15 in the front an a 46 in the back so I get more bottom end. also a new chain so it does not wear down my sprockets. well with my choice. how much top end do you think I will loose?

Your going to hate that gearing, it won't even make 95. and the constant reves will drive you nuts.
Shorty, you seem to be falling in every pitfall you can find. I hope your just asking this stuff.

Thanks for that, I nomally would have take it the wrong way, but I look at it as he is trying to help me out.

Well ya the reason I wanted to regear my sprockets was because I am not going to be doing 130mph but it would be nice to ahve faster ACL.

OK I was thinking about it all day, An how I said 2 down in the front an 4 up in the back that would be 10, an how FOG was saying that would kill my bike, I was thinking about going only woth a difference of 5 instead of 10. Like down one in the front an up 2 in the back. so it would not kill my top end but it would bost my bottom end. how does that sound?

Shorty , it's simple math. Stock on your bike is 16/41 or 2.562 If you change anything you just do the numbers.
Ok take you latests dream 15/43 or 2.866 2.562/2.866= .893 or a little ove a 10% reduction This will be held linear across the operation range a 10% reduction in top speed and a 10% increase in aceleration and a 10% increase in reves at any speed. and it will close the reach between gears by 10%.
SO you don't have to ask what we think, just do the math and you'll know.

89 GPZ500 stock would be 16-41. Also Fog used to race these bikes so he does have extensive knowledge of this type thing.
