I bought a 88 ex, project bike, that has a blown head gasket. The person who tore it down didn't get the whole way through the job and didn't label anything in the head (rockers), when he took it down. Does any one know what the timing needs to be set at to get it back together and running. Anyone know of any links that does have this info.

Here's how.

Turn the crank till the right hand piston is at TDC witness the mark in the top inspection plug on the left side case.

find the intake cam (marked IN) pull the cam chain snugg and set the cam with the In mark rearward and level with the cam box surface.

count 24 pins on the cam chain and set the exhaust cam with the Ex mark foward and level with the cam box surface.

Rotate the engine several revolution by hand and verify those marks.
