So i am going back and forth with whether or not to take the iPod on my rides...it's legal here in AZ but i like being able to hear me bike as i ride. Who out there listens while they ride? Advantages/ Disadvantages? ???

Sounds like a swell way to go deaf.

Unless you get the special (and expensive!) in-the-ear headphones that also cancel outside sound, then you'll have to have your music extremely loud to be able to hear it over the road noise, and wearing ear-phones will also prevent you from wearing earplugs, so all that together gives you a great chance of losing your hearing.

I listen all the time. Be sure to use the in-the-ear headphones, they cut down the wind noise so you don't have to have the volume up high.

I used to listen while I ride.

I used Skull Candy earphone which block out the wind noise and lets you keep the volume low.

The advantage is, with the right songs, you ride more aggressively, take turns a little faster, lean a little further, twist the throttle a little harder...

but those can all be disadvantages too. =p

I've had the Sure E2C earphone for 2 years and they work wonders. Protect your ears from the bike and allow you to keep the volume down. It's like a double protection in a way. And the wa you put them in (over your ear) secures them in your helmet so they don't get pulled out when you put the lid on or when you look around.

I'll 2nd that one....
I have a set of them as well... and I LOVE them.
I rarely wear them in the city (if I do.... it's only in one ear)
for long drives on the highway I usually wear both earphones (they act as earplugs too). I like the music... and I couldn't hear anything over the road noise anyway if I didn't wear anything in my ears. Like wvninja said:
I figure if I'm gonna wear earplugs I might as well hear some music.
in either case... the volume's always kept low.

wow... do you even look at what you type anymore???

the noise cancelling headphones were the best things i've ever purchased for riding.  not only do they cancel out the fatigue causing low-freq. noise of the bike,  they also help a bit with the wind noise (but that's more a function of the earplug style of the headphones), and most importantly allow me to listen to the music with MUCH less volume than non-earplug, non-noise cancelling earbuds (without 'em i'd have to turn my iPod all the way up to hear decently over the noise).

overall i'd say it's not even what i'd consider a compromise between riding with earplugs and riding with earbuds - it's far more towards the earplug side:  getting the model that fits your ear the best will result in minimal noise, and minimum volume required to hear the music.  i can still hear the bike and other road noises just fine, it is up to the USER to be responsible and not listen to the music so loud as to cause hearing loss or drown out the road noises. i fly as well, and a lot of my fellow pilots have expressed concerns about noise cancelling and not being able to hear the engine (particularly in single piston engine aircraft)... and a few even said they'd 'never get 'em', but as soon as i tried a pair i knew i'd have to use them... the difference in sound (and lack of fatigue) is amazing and i still hear everything i need to.

oh, yeah, a decent pair of earphones will only cost you about $10 more than those overpriced earbuds they sell you at the Apple store.

I ride 50/50 half the time Ive got my psp running to my helmet. Shades of gray you are right that the volume has to be a little loud for you to hear it. You dont realize how truly loud it is till you come to a stop  ahhhhh!

I'm a big fan of these and they reduce the wind noise terrifically.
HOWEVER, they're not legal and I don't wear them around town. They're only for when I'll be riding on the freeway for an hour or more.
I used them while riding from San Diego to Philadelphia and back, and I burnt books-on-CD on my Mp3 player.
It was great, because I usually kept the speed at 75mph or less so I could hear the book clearly, so despite seeing many cops pounce when they saw my ZX9R approach , I never got a single speeding ticket.

Peace and safe riding.
