Hey there, i decided to put an 05 ex500 motor in a 83 honda 250r. I know some people would think it was a stupid idea but i know when this thing goes its gonna haul! I have everything I need for the bike. Everything is put together and the bike turns on and turns over(tail light, headlight and gauges work), but i dont have any spark. Ive read A LOT of posts on this site and they were very helpfull but no one has a situation like I do. I wouldnt consider myself a novice with bikes and engines but this thing is driving me crazy! A few questions- Do the coils have to be grounded to the frame or the engine to work? where exactly are the ground points on the bike/harness? the only one i have is the negative coming from the battery to the starter. I have TONS of pictures if it would help answer my questions. Any help would be GREAT! thank you!

I think its a cool idea. These motors are good for most anything.

I made three different grounds on my frame and made sure the coil mounts went metel to metal as well since that's how they were on the kaw frame. get an ohm meter and make sure you wires are good with no breaks by going end to end of each wire in the ignition system if possible for you harness setup.

The pickups and IC Ignitor / CDI box seem to be the two weak points that give trouble. i am wainting on a new brain box since all my other crap seems to check okay but i only get spark on one cylinder. waiting to see if I figured it out or wasted my money. only time will tell since I am waiting on it to be shipped.

Thank you for your posts. I have the black wire attached to the frame but I don't think its a clean ground. I am going to work on that before I buy a new CDI box(even though I tested it with a meter and it seems to be ok) I also tested the coils and the wires and they seem to be fine.

Hey FLEX500 I sent a PM but never heard back. Where/what/how did you make your header. I am willing to bet that several people would pay you to make a custom header for our projects.
I think you may have me mixed up with someone else. I did receive your pm but I have never made any headers. Thanks for the compliment anyway.

You say you made three different grounds on your frame. What do you mean by that? I am only aware of two right now. I made a similar frankenstein bike with an 05 cbr600rr motor and had no problems with ground issues. The harness was set up really easy and had specific wires for the grounds

Battery to frame (8g), frame to coil (14g), coil to battery(16g)

Don't worry about noise.

Mine is a hodge podge harness with the ignition and charging systems seperated from the rest of the harness. I made one that goes from battery to the frame. That ground continues the point where the starter grounds to the frame. I also have the battery ground to frame with a 12g wire that goes to the ground for the IC and charging system. It's been a while but that sounds right. Its overkill but i did not want to worry about grounds with all the other "custom" work i've done.

I have tried almost everything. ??? ??? Does anyone live in Las Vegas? I could really use a hand figuring this thing out. None of the bike shops around will touch it because its too much of a liability
