How do I change the ignition barrel?

When I got my bike it had no helmet locks, no seat lock, and 2 diferent keys for the ignition and tank. I have bought a full set (2 helmet locks, seat lock, gas cap and ignition) off ebay working on 2 keys (both the same). How do I get the old ignition barrel out to change it? Is there a way or does it have to be drilled out?

You can take the whole ignition switch off from the top triple. there are two bolts that have had their head snapped off as a anti theft measure but a few taps with a punch and hammer will un screw them easilly. Then the switch cable un plugs. Then take the whole thing to a locksmith and he'll change the lock for you.

So If I am understanding this right, You remove the triple tree, turn it upside down so that you can see the 2 bolts with no heads and knock it with a punch and hammer counterclock wise? Then after you unscrew the bolts, the switch cable unplugs from the bottom of the cylinder?

How do you reinstall it? Do you punch it untill it's tight?

Oh oops, That makes sense, why would I put chewed up bolt heads back in the thing. Mine is starting to have to be giggled before I can start the bike. So I will be changing mine soon too. Thanks FOG.

On my '89s the ignition is secured with a pair of reverse torx bolts. They are composed of a metal that has the same Rockwell hardness rating as a frozen stick of butter, so be careful.

When I was troubleshooting an electrical issue recently, I pulled the ignition off one to try on the other and while I was able to get one bolt out with the appropriate socket, the other required a bit of vise-grip persuasion.
