I hope to get some answers from FOG here. Started a project expecting to go to Maxton and Bonneville. Going to turbocharge an EX. I have concerns that I have heard about the EX spitting out head gaskets. I have read, understand and believe in FOG's posting about lapping heads. Also contacted Cometic about head gasket options. Has anyone ever "Ringed" an EX and is so what has the experience brough them

Land Speed, 500 cc 4 stroke MPS-BF, current records are attainable

I've never "ORinged" an EX, but I've "ORinged" plenty of others.
I used copper head gaskets on my EX and had no real problems.

What kind of boost you plan on running?
Your problem is not going to be head seal. Your problem is going to be the bottom end going to pieces first.
...and if you plan on running enough boost that head seal is a problem, what are you going to use for an ignition? At about 12to1 pre-ignition becomes a REAL problem with an EX. You plan on using water injection or killing compression?

I can knock down compression if needed. I joined this forum just to learn about such things. I was expecting to use an adapted system from Big Stuff 3. Carbs from the first parts bike are already on their way to Ebay. Fuel Injection, intercooler, etc. I had a feeling that the bottom end was going to be an issue. I know I do not have to throw crazy boost at it to make power. I beleive I can get it done with less than 6PSI boost.

Well I mentioned getting beaten down because the general consensus here is that the EX has a bottom end that is too weak to sustain the stresses of added power. If you dig deep enough in here you'll find a few recipes for high horsepower EXs but all of them only lasted a few race weekends before grenading. The motor was original designed as a 454cc twin in a relatively timid cruiser. It was punched out from there to 500 and used in the Ninja and a few other Kawasaki models.

I believe there may be a better platform to start with. Maybe a 450cc motocrosser? Super Singles are already pushing 120MPH and ~50HP and you'd get the added benefit of much lighter components, aluminum frame, modern valve train, better performance parts availability, fairing kits, etc etc...

Very interesting insight. I will have to look into that. I can get engines cheap and they only have to last about 20 miles. singles do not drive turbos all that well though.

PM Wolf66. I forget what crank he was using (Falicon?), but he was making 70+ hp. with his EX. Lots of dollars were spent to get there. Good luck.

Well aside from all the nitty gritty of making power. The ultimate limit will be the cases. They are simply not strong enough to contain any real power production. Figure on keeping the reves below 10,000 .

Okay, there's one of the answers I was looking for, rev limit. if I can squeeze power out with out revving like crazy that's just fine.

Might want a larger & lighter radiator, perhaps a slightly faster pump?

Maybe I should have been a little more specfic.

The first thing that will fail is

The Rods. They will buckle under much of an increase in BMEP

The Crank will snap if over reved under sever load. be sure to remove that flywheel and provide a new ignition timer

Pistons will simply burn through Forged one are a must

Blow by as the cylinders are too thin to hold Much of an increase in BMEP. New sleeves of thicker walls

FInally the cases will distort causing main bearing failure.

Those are the main things , but depending on what you do or not do. Dozens of other things.

Just how big do you think the explosion is going to be?
At just what cylinder pressure do you think it's going to blow FOG?
FOG, you've got a lot of insight, do you think you'd be willing to help me put something like this together? Guess I should wear a flack jacket and a cup when I ride

The EX engine is just a poor base to build anything on. It really old and stretched to the limit. I was designed when Liter bike made 50 HP and simply hasn't the strength to with stand much more.
The bigest problem is the cam drive in the middle. The makes the crank too long and splits the engine down the middle allowing it to distort and warp as two singles held together with Duct tape. The on the end of this too long crank they hung the giant weight of the alternator.
The the list I gave before. I'm saying that a better choice would be to sleeve and stoke a modern 600 engine like a CBR down to 500 cc then pump the hell out of it.

Okay, that does make sense. I got a bunch of EX500 parts for sale now. Lucky I only paid $200 for the first bike. what brough you to Mounstain Ark? I lived in Fayettenam for five years and still have some friends there. It is a beautiful state and there's only about 12 last names, just kidding there's some really great people there. I was there when slick willie was gubnor

Mountain Home Is Paradise. Great country full of nice people. Cheap good living. No traffic. I'm a 100 miles for the nearest interstate ,and wish it were 200. Love the mountains. I've got deer and ***** and all kinds of animals and birds that I share my place with. Can't imagine how I could live anywhere else. Maybe Colorodo mountains.

I lived all my life in NJ and CT and I couldn't wait to retire to get out of there..

Hey FOG I will be attempting the same thing with my tracker at Bonneville only I'm not interested in turboing mine out.

Any recomendations for all motor power?

Colorado is only better if you love snow. Arkansas is a wondeful place, I sill keep in touch with a handful of people from my days in Fayetteville. I never did make it to Mountain Home though. I do understand that a lot has been built up though, 71 is super slab from 40 to Missouri now.

I don't care about 71 that's 150 miles to my west. They can keep it.

I've been here for 5 years and in that small time this place has grown enough to disturb me. I understand the youngens wanting everything, but they don't understand how wonderfull they have it now. I may have to move further out into the boonies.

Whats a Tracker? And your Naivete tells me you should study your objective a lot more.

Sounds like that's about the only modification other than suspension and brakes that should be done to this bike
