This will not happen. Why would they slot in a redesigned 500 between the 650R and 250R? IMO, they should just let it go to drive sales either way in the beginner to intermediate market. The 500 is doing them more harm than good right now on showroom floors. Plenty of them in the used market to generate Kawi buzz, too, so the beginners still get hooked.

If they do this after I have already purchased my 08 ninja 500R, I will go and get my CBR. Damn it.
Yeah, I have an 08 also. I won't be happy to be stuck with an outdated one. If it were to look like the 250 I'd want one bad. It's definitely not a good time to sell an 08 (or anything really in this economy. I got the Triumph for $2600 below blue book).

Why in the red hot hell would anyone buy a 2010 Ninja 500 when the Ninja 650 is available?
Why did people buy the 500 new for the last few years? its gonna sell, some new riders dont want to get stuck with a 250 but dont want to go all the way to a 600 or 650, the 500 is a good starter bike, IMO a much better starter than a 250 for most riders since they wont feel like they need to upgrade after a month

I'm the type of person a new 500r would appeal to. I like fuel economy, and don't require a 1000cc motor to have fun.

If they made it FI, a proper suspension, maintained the ergonomics, pumped out another 15 or so horse from an updated motor, that would probably be perfect for me.

But I'm not holding my breath on this, it seems all companies are doing these days is making the 650 the new 500. 125-250-650-600-1000-1400 seems to be the order to go these days.

Nope, still doesn't do it for me - but I use my bike for different purposes than just fun - I do touring, commuting, etc. So that bike wouldn't suit my needs either unless it was redesigned.

I can seriously see a used VFR800 in my future.
